This amazing piece of technology keeps you green while offering driving performance and high-tech functionality, all at a relatively affordable price. Our runner up is the Mercedes Benz S-class luxury car. If you’ve got the cash to spend on a luxury vehicle, you can’t go wrong with the S-class. Keep reading below to learn more about the Model 3, the S-class and the other best vehicles on our list.

To help you find the best vehicles across a wide variety of different categories, we spent over 35 hours driving 30 different vehicles, including electric and luxury cars, electric motorcycles, electric bicycles, electric scooters, electric skateboards and hoverboards. Our testing focused on design quality, range and driving performance. We also measured each option based on its dedication to user friendliness and comfort. If the best vehicle from your home is a truck, you may also want to take a look at the best fifth wheel hitch.

Top 7 Best Vehicles

 #1  Tesla Model 3

Tesla Model 3

Award: TOP PICK

WHY WE LIKE IT: Tesla’s most popular electric car is the culmination of years of work. It offers affordable luxury, tons of high-tech features and an overall smooth and nimble driving experience.

Pros
  • Amazing overall performance
  • Handles really well
  • Modern, durable interior
Cons
  • No AM or SiriusXM radio
  • Superchargers aren’t free anymore
  • Self-driving still needs work

The Tesla Model 3 is the result of everything Tesla has done up until now. This option is one of the best cars of the year. It’s more affordable than the Model S and Model X while still offering plenty of luxury and bleeding edge tech than you can find in many electric cars today. The car is built with a minimalist’s design aesthetic with a large central touch screen that controls everything. While having a center touch screen control center can be a bit distracting at times, the sheer amount of high-tech functionality it offers is well worth it. The stark interior is comfortable and the seats are made from durable polyurethane. If you’re interested in more vehicle functionality, then check out our guide to the best all season tires.

When it comes to driving performance, you’d be hard pressed to find something better in a similar price range. Like every all-electric vehicle, the Model 3 is ultra quiet and extra smooth on the road. If you spring for the dual-motor Performance version, you get breathtaking acceleration and speed even in spite of its rear wheel drive, but the base model is still incredibly speedy. The Model 3 is nimble on the road with excellent handling. It’s still a heavy car, though, and that much is apparent when trying to open it up a little more. The Model 3 also includes a self-driving mode, if you pay extra for it, which is always fun and interesting. However, the software and AI behind the feature could still use some work, which is to be expected with such a brand new technology. With a car this nice, you’ll need the best car garbage can to make sure you’re keeping things clean.

 #2  Mercedes Benz S-Class

Mercedes Benz S-Class

Award: HONORABLE MENTION

WHY WE LIKE IT: Unmatched interior quality, top notch materials, plenty of gadgets and well engineered performance hardware make the S-Class the leader when it comes to the best luxury sedans. Available tech includes hybrid gas-electric powertrains, thermal imaging cameras, massaging seats and bespoke cabin perfumes.

Pros
  • Opulent cabins
  • Attractive design inside and out
  • Plenty of power
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Steep prices

Though its current design dates back to 2014, the Mercedes S-Class still looks fresh and still turns heads on the road. Eschewing the rather bland and busy styling of its predecessor, the current S-Class signaled a new direction for Mercedes Benz styling and proved it was still at the forefront of the top luxury car brands. The S-Class range includes a wide variety of models ranging from the almost eco friendly, whisper quiet hybrid S560e to the V-12 powered S65 AMG and Maybach S65 ultra luxe models.

Since 2018 the Mercedes S class has offered technical wizardry like semi autonomous driving, a configurable digital dashboard and an active suspension that leans the sports car into turns, counteracting centripetal force by up to 2.5 degrees. There’s no doubt about it, the S-class is just a good car all around, and it’s made even better with all of the luxury features it offers.  #3  Elby 9-Speed Electric Bike

We’re sorry, this product is temporarily out of stock

Award: BEST ELECTRIC BIKE

WHY WE LIKE IT: This Elby electric bike is loaded with premium features, including a better-than-average range, powerful motor and best-of-class design. If eco-friendly biking is your preferred mode of transportation, the Elby is the best for you.

Pros
  • Powerful 500 watt motor
  • Attractive design inside and out
  • High weight capacity
Cons
  • Heavier than other options
  • Disappointing top speeds
  • Expensive

The Elby 9-speed is the cream of the crop when it comes to electric bicycles. With a powerful 500 watt motor, the Elby provides the most reliable riding experience in any situation. For starters, it features a top speed of 20 miles per hour, which isn’t the fastest top speed we’ve tested, but it’s still enough to quickly get you where you’re going. It’s also got a super impressive total range of 90 miles on a single charge, which is a huge advantage over many other e-bikes. Plus, when you need to charge the battery, it will only take 5 hours.

When it comes to build quality, you won’t find a more well-made e-bike. Even without the electrical components, the Elby is a 9-speed bike so you can use it as a standard bike if you’re ever out of juice without any available charging options. It’s also got a super sturdy frame that can handle up to 280 total pounds. Other features include LED lights for use at night, a heavy-duty kickstand, hydraulic disc brakes and rails for saddle bags. You even get a USB charging port built directly into the bike so you can charge your phone on the go.  #4  Gotrax GXL V2 Electric Scooter

Award: BEST ELECTRIC SCOOTER

WHY WE LIKE IT: A rider-focused design, high top speed and long range battery life make this Gotrax electric scooter our favorite of the lot. It’s also water resistant and features large, air-filled tires for added durability.

Pros
  • 15 MPH top speed
  • Great tires for a smooth ride
  • IP54 water resistance
Cons
  • LED headlights could be brighter
  • Longer charge time
  • Heavier than other options

The Gotrax GXL V2 electric scooter is one of the best options we’ve tested to date, and it’s the best buy for your money, too. The most impressive thing about this electric scooter is its overall design quality. You’ll notice right away that it’s designed with aesthetics in mind, featuring a modern black finish with red accents and large tires. The Gotrax clearly demonstrates that it’s designed for riders with LED headlights, a folding frame and incredibly helpful display. The display is our favorite feature here. It not only displays your speed and remaining battery life, it also allows you to change gears and operate the headlights. If you want more great product recommendations like this, then visit our best truck bed liner guide.

When it comes to performance, the GXL V2 electric scooter is just right for the widest number of riders. With an excellent top speed of 15 miles per hour and 12 mile battery life, this scooter is perfect for anyone needing a quick local commute. It also features a dual braking system for more efficient braking and large, inflatable tires that absorb shock while you’re riding around. While there are some little things we wish we could improve with the Gotrax GXL V2, it’s still a nearly perfect electric scooter that will fit most everyone’s needs and budget.

 #5  RazorX Longboard Electric Skateboard

Award: BEST ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD

WHY WE LIKE IT: The RazorX electric skateboard is built extremely well and made for an overall smooth ride that beginner and veteran boarders will love. Combine that with an affordable price point, and you’ve got the best electric skateboard your money can buy.

Pros
  • Durable, user-friendly bamboo deck
  • Remote is incredibly easy to use
  • Solid 10 MPH top speed
Cons
  • Disappointing battery life
  • Not for heavier riders
  • Short, 90 day warranty

The first thing you’ll notice about the RazorX Longboard electric skateboard is its extra-durable design. Made almost entirely from 5-ply bamboo and perforated grip tape, this electric longboard will keep your ride as smooth as possible. This deck design is also extra user-friendly, especially when combined with included remote control.

You get the RazorX’s motor started via kick start, which is effortless, and the included lithium ion battery gives you a little under an hour of use. We do wish the battery life were a little longer, but it’s usually more than enough to get you going where you need to go. The 125W motor is usually enough power to get you up most hills, but it can struggle when ascending hills with riders over 200 pounds. The motor also gives you a top speed of around 10 MPH, which we found to be perfect for riders of any skill level.

 #6  Zero SR/F Motorcycle

Zero SR/F Motorcycle

Award: BEST ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

WHY WE LIKE IT: The Zero revolutionizes the electric motorcycle experience with outstanding performance, a host of high-tech features and amazing MPGe ratings.

Pros
  • Amazing, smooth performance
  • Ultra quiet driving
  • Multiple driving modes
Cons
  • No fast charging available
  • Higher speeds, lower range

Zero is to electric motorcycles as Tesla is to electric cars. This motorcycle manufacturer is making waves in the electric motorcycle world, and has continually set the benchmarks for all electric bikes to come. The Zero SR/F is incredibly easy to drive since there’s no clutch or shifter to keep your hands and feet occupied. While some diehards may miss these almost ritualistic driving functions, we found that it helped us focus on just how enjoyable it was to drive the SR/F.

Overall performance is smooth and quiet. The bike’s 14.4 kWh lithium-ion battery is rated for 161 miles of range, but if you like speed, you’ll notice that range is cut by a considerable amount, which was a little disappointing. When it comes time to charge, you’ll likely spend around 4.5 hours waiting for a full charge, unless you spring for a Premium model. Zero has, unfortunately, been slower to adopt fast EV charging options. You also get four different driving modes with the Zero SR/F – Eco, Rain, Sport and Street – for greater control during varying conditions. All in all, the Zero SR/F is the electric motorcycle to beat.

 #7  Tomoloo LED Hoverboard

Award: BEST HOVERBOARD

WHY WE LIKE IT: If you’re looking for something that’s fun to drive, fast and reliable hoverboard riding experience, you can’t go wrong with the Tomoloo Hoverboard with LED lights. It’s got stellar battery life, built-in Bluetooth speakers and a high top speed, making it the best hoverboard we’ve tested.

Pros
  • Extra-long range
  • Fun and durable design
  • 4-hour battery life
Cons
  • App could be better
  • Struggles on rough terrain

The Tomoloo Hoverboard with LED lights is an impressive unit that stood out from the crowd during our tests, both with adults and kids. For starters, its designed with fun in mind. You get colorful LED lights that flash and integrated Bluetooth speakers to play music from your phone while you ride. You can control all these features through the Tomoloo smartphone app. The app isn’t the most well designed, but it ultimately does what it needs to.

When it comes to performance, the Tomoloo hoverboard offers an incredibly long battery life, clocking in at around 4 hours of total run time. You’d be hard pressed to find a hoverboard with a longer battery life than this. You also get a fast charge time with the Tomoloo. When you run out of juice, you’ll only need to wait an hour or so for a full charge. Total range is around 12 miles and speeds top out around 7.5 MPH, perfect for adults and kids alike.

How We Decided

The word vehicle is such a broad term and can apply to so many different products today. For this list, we focused our efforts on several categories that we feel encompassed most people’s needs. From hoverboards to luxury cars, you should be able to find something that fits your individual travel needs on our list of the best vehicles.

While each of these categories is different in its own way, there are a variety of factors common across them all. We chose to focus on those similarities for our ratings and reviews. First, we rated each option based on its overall design quality. The best vehicles should be designed well and designed to last with normal use and the proper maintenance. We awarded bonus points for extra features that improved the overall experience. Things like more intuitive controls, smoother rides and added comfort all increased a product’s overall score.

Finally, we focused on driving performance. The last thing you want to experience with a new vehicle is poor performance, especially after spending a large amount of money. Our top picks all perform well under most driving conditions. We also rated options higher if they gave you control over driving options, where applicable.

Best Vehicle Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Fits Your Needs
The most important consideration to make when purchasing a new vehicle is whether it fits your needs or not. We feature a wide variety of different vehicles on our list above, and not every option will help you get to your specific destination. Consider why you’re purchasing a new vehicle and make your purchase based on that need. Vehicles like electric scooters and electric bikes are perfect for local commutes, whereas cars and motorcycles are more suited to long distance travel.
  2. Design Quality
Buying a new vehicle is often an expensive endeavor, so you’ll want to be sure you purchase an option that will last you an amount of time relative to the price you paid. This longevity is found largely in a vehicle’s design quality. Things like comfortable front and rear seats, added convenience features and onboard storage only serve to make the overall operation of the vehicle better for you. Try to find a vehicle that’s built well and has glowing review from customers who have used it for long periods of time.
  3. Fuel Economy
How far your new vehicle will take you is another incredibly important factor, and ties closely into the “Fits Your Needs” section above. If the new scooter you’re buying only has a range of 15 miles and your workplace is 20 miles away, then the purchase becomes pointless. Consider the distance to your most commonly visited destinations and ensure your new vehicle can get you there and back. Vehicles that are fuel efficient or battery efficient are better value than those that aren’t.
  4. Maintenance and Repair
All vehicles needs maintenance and repair, the amount of which can vary depending on the type of vehicle you get. Consider the amount of maintenance you’ll need to perform for your vehicle and make sure you can handle it. Cars will often need the most amount of maintenance since there are so many moving parts involved, while things like e-bikes and hoverboards will only involve minimal maintenance and repairs.
