Review: Omaker MOMI Ultra Portable Metallic Mini Wireless Bluetooth Speaker in Pink or Blue: $16 (Orig. $80)

Amazon is offering the Omaker Ultra Portable Metallic Mini Wireless Bluetooth Speaker in Pink or Blue for only $15.99 Prime shipped when you use the coupon code: VBM26USJ at checkout. That’s a $64 savings off the list price and the lowest we’ve seen for the speaker.

Omaker sent us a review unit this week and it works darn well for a $16 speaker.

Their words:

It has a metallic finish with simple design. It features Bluetooth 3.0+EDR and it’s “unique and compact ostrich egg fashion appearance slips easily into your bag for use on the go.” It’s high definition and surprising fullness realized through a 4W driver and bass port – outclassing other similar-sized portable speakers. Built-in big capacity Polymer Lithium Batteries allow for a playback time of up to 8 hours.

Ours:

Is it going to give something like Logitech’s Boom line a run for its money?  No, not at all. But it is pretty nice and a nice accessory for a mobile device. It pairs easily and it actually says in broken english “MOMI IS WAITING FOR YOUR CONNECTION” and then confirms your connection. Then when you lose connection, more broken English.

It sounds a little bit better than the speakers on a MacBook Pro and yet it can fit in your pocket and make speakerphone calls very nicely though we heard an echo in our testing).  It has lasted over 5 hours in our brief testing.

It received 4.6/5 stars and great reviews from Amazon customers. We’re in agreement. If you need a speaker and have $16 to spend, then go for it!

IK Multimedia launches the new iRig Mic HD for iOS and Mac/PC

IK Multimedia, makers of mobile and home recording gear, are releasing the new
iRig Mic HD for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac/PC. The HD is an all-in-one recording option designed for home recording, podcasters and online radio broadcasters as well journalists and videographers on the go.

An upgraded version of IK’s previous model mic, the HD is a digital condenser that has a built-in “low-noise high-definition” pre-amp and features 24-bit, 48 kHz A/D converters, that negate the need for a sometimes expensive audio interface. It also has a handy gain control to ensure recordings of all types get tracked properly.

It comes with both a Lightning cable for your iOS devices as well as a USB cable for your Mac or PC (the 30-pin connector is sold separately). It also comes with a mic clip (for standard sized mic stands), a carrying case and a suite of software for iOS and Mac/PC including iRig Recorder, VocaLive and AmpliTube.

While you’re not likely to get the same quality digital conversion through one of these as something like a high quality Apogee interface, you’re also paying a fraction of the price at $129.99. Early impressions seem to be positive in terms of recording quality for the price range, but it may be smart to look into comparable Blue Microphones which have dropped in price recently. However, you’ll still pay significantly more for a mic that does both iOS and Mac/PC like the new iRig HD Pro.

The iRig Mic HD is available for preorder now and will come in a black model and a silver one exclusive to the Apple Store.

Notifyr app goes free (Reg. $4), receive iOS notifications on your Mac

Update: Just as a quick clarification, Notifyr is only free on every second day starting on August 6th.

We recently spotted a new app called Notifyr on the App Store, and today the developers have kicked off a sale offering the notification app for free. Every second day for the next 7 days Notifyr will be available for free of charge, down from the usual $3.99.

Notifyr is a two pronged notification service, providing the above iOS app and a free Mac companion app. Using a standard Bluetooth connection, your iOS notifications will appear on your Mac as if they were any other Mac Notification Center alert. These aren’t just Apple notifications either, “you can read your incoming WhatsApp messages, see who’s following you on Instagram or read any of the other kind of notifications from any app on your iPhone. It’s also possible to mute notifications from any app you like.”

We recently put the two apps to work in our hands on test of the system and found that everything from phone calls and Facebook Messages to iMessages and SMS messages worked seamlessly. For more details on the apps and limitations on devices head over to our full rundown.

Save 30% on an AppleCare Protection Plan for your 13 or 15-inch MacBook

Even the biggest critics of warrantees generally agree that AppleCare for Macs is a worthwhile investment if you have the room in your budget. In fact, it consistently pummels competition in Consumer Reports’ yearly tech support survey.

AppleCare for Macs extends the original 1-year hardware and 90-day phone support to 3-years. This is extremely valuable for Mac owners since these beautiful laptops are nearly impossible to repair for the average consumer and out-of-pocket repairs are extremely costly from Apple. Unfortunately, it does not cover accidental damage to your Mac, but one repair instance is likely to pay for the upfront cost of the plan.

Unlike iPhone and iPad AppleCare Protection Plans, it can be added to any Mac within 1-year of purchase. Each standalone AppleCare box will include a code that you can register online to your Mac’s serial number.

Here’s where to save 30% on AppleCare for 13 and 15-inch MacBooks, which is less than Apple’s .edu pricing:

Take $150 off early 2014 MacBook Airs (requires .edu email), deals from $750 (up to 17% off)

One of the best ways to get a discount on brand new Macs has typically been Apple’s education pricing, but that’s not true this release cycle. Best Buy has been offering customers with .edu email addresses a $150 savings on nearly all MacBooks but until now the brand new April 2014 MacBook Airs were excluded.

Best Buy has lifted the ban on these models so you can use your unique education discount on any of the new MacBook Airs, which will net you the entry-level 11-inch model for just $749.99 with free shipping (17% off). As a pricing comparison, Apple only offers its education customers a $50 discount on this same model. This is currently the best pricing you’ll find on a new condition MacBook Air from the past two years since the EOL deal is now sold out.

To cash in on this deal you must register your .edu email address here, wait to receive a confirmation email from Best Buy, and then apply the promo code from the email during checkout.
