Civilization: Beyond Earth arrives today for Mac user: $35 (Reg. $50)

CivBE-Press-iMac1

Following an announcement last month that the latest entry in the popular Civilization strategy game series would hit Mac sometime this holiday season, today Civilization: Beyond Earth has officially arrived for Mac users. The game, developed by Firaxis and brought to Mac users by Aspyr, first hit PC on October 24th.

Beyond Earth offers a fresh take on the traditional strategy gameplay of previous entries with a new sci-fi theme that lets users explore deep space and other futuristic settings.

As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people into a new frontier and create a new civilization in space. Explore and colonize an alien planet, research new technologies, amass mighty armies, build incredible Wonders and shape the face of your new world. As you embark on your journey you must make critical decisions. From your choice of sponsor and the make-up of your colony, to the ultimate path you choose for your civilization, every decision opens up new possibilities.

The Mac version arrives today with all of the features included in the PC counterpart including cross platform multiplayer and save syncing between all platforms.

The game is available today through all of the usual suspects including Steam, the Mac App Store, and developer Aspyr’s own GameAgent store. It cost $49.99, but the $41 preorder deal is still live through Cyber Monday from Aspyr and Steam has it for $35 right now.

Features:

  • Seed the Adventure: Establish your cultural identity by choosing one of eight different expedition sponsors, each with its own leader and unique gameplay benefits. Assemble your spacecraft, cargo & colonists through a series of choices that directly seed the starting conditions when arriving at the new planet.
  • Colonize an Alien World: Explore the dangers and benefits of a new planet filled with dangerous terrain, mystical resources, and hostile life forms unlike those of Earth. Build outposts, unearth ancient alien relics, tame new forms of life, develop flourishing cities and establish trade routes to create prosperity for your people.
  • Technology Web: To reflect progress forward into an uncertain future, technology advancement occurs through a series of nonlinear choices that affect the development of mankind. The technology web is organized around three broad themes, each with a distinct victory condition.
  • Orbital Layer: Build and deploy advanced military, economic and scientific satellites that provide strategic offensive, defensive and support capabilities from orbit.
  • Unit Customization: Unlock different upgrades through the tech web and customize your units to reflect your play style.
  • Multiplayer: Up to 8 players can compete for dominance of a new alien world.

Microsoft’s new 365 subscription gets you Office on one Mac or PC & tablet for $69/year

Site default logo image

Office-devices-Microsoft

Microsoft is launching a cheaper ‘Personal’ Office 365 subscription today that will give you access to the cloud services and mobile apps for $69/year or $6.99/month opposed to the $99/year Home subscription. The new Personal subscription only provides access for one Mac (or PC) and iPad (or tablet) instead of the 5 PC or Macs and 5 tablets you get with a Home subscription.

You might want to hold off on the new subscription, however, as Amazon is currently selling the full Home subscription for just $63 (37% off). That’s cheaper than the new $69 Personal plan, but it’s possible Microsoft could soon end that discount and change prices on Amazon now that the new Personal subscription is launching.

Samsung’s new billion-color, 28-inch 4K monitor is now available to preorder: $699

Site default logo image

Samsung-UD590-4k-03

First introduced at CES in January, Samsung today quietly started taking preorders for a new billion-color, 3,840 x 2,160 28-inch 4K monitor. The UD590 includes two HDMI 1.4 and one DisplayPort, audio out, and introduces a slick brushed metal look with thin bezels and a ’T-shaped’ stand that minimizes the machine’s overall footprint. Perhaps the most intriguing part about Samsung’s new display is the price: $699 makes the UD590 an extremely competitive option to monitors from Dell, Sharp, Asus and others with similar specs but much higher price tags. Also included is a new “Picture-by-Picture” mode that lets you “connect two PCs to the same monitor and see the desktops of both simultaneously on one screen that’s divided into two.”

The monitor will be released and ship on April 18, but you can preorder it from Amazon now for $699 with free shipping using the link below:

Best Buy offering iPhone 5s for $75 off all models on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon

Site default logo image

Best-Buy-iPhone-5s-deal

It might not be as good as the $0 offer available through some of the smaller regional carriers, but if you want a discount on a new iPhone 5s this weekend from one of the big guys this might be the best deal we see. Best Buy just let us know it’s offering the iPhone 5s on the usual two-year contract for $75 off. That puts it at $125 instead of the usual $199 up-front cost of the device, and the deal is good for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. That’s the price of the 16GB model, but the deal also extends to the 32GB model for $225, and the 64GB model for $325.

If you’d rather go with T-Mobile, the carrier currently has a $0 down deal on iPhones, but that won’t really save you much on the cost of the device. The monthly instalment plan is $27 a month instead of the usual $20, so you’ll still pay off the cost of your device after two years. Still a great way to get an iPhone for $0 down if you’re a T-Mobile customer or into its no-contract plans. Walmart seems to have the only decent discount on the iPhone 5c at $45 ($30 off) on-contract.

Best Buy’s iPhone deal will last today and tomorrow only. The company also just announced it’s offering $50 off the white and space gray iPad mini.

T-Mobile, regional carriers offering iPhone 5s and 5c for $0 down on Black Friday

Site default logo image

iPhone-5s5c-deals

According to a leaked internal memo posted by TmoNews, T-Mobile is going to be dropping the upfront price of both the iPhone 5s and 5c to $0 down on its usual installment plans for Black Friday. That cuts the usual down payment for the iPhone 5s down from $149 and the iPhone 5c from $49. The deal will officially kick off on Friday and last through Sunday, but the report notes that “a select number of stores will be accepting orders from Thursday evening.” After getting your iPhone for $0 down, you’ll pay around $20 a month for 24 months on T-Mobile installment plans.

Some regionals carriers are also gearing up for big discounts this Friday. Appalachian Wireless announced it will offer the 16GB iPhone 5, 5C or 5S for a penny on contract today only and nTelos will also have the iPhone 5c for $0 on Friday. Appalachian is also advertising the penny deal for Black Friday on its site, but no word if iPhones will be included after today. T-Mobile definitely beats Walmart’s best deal with the iPhone 5c for around $45 on contract, but we’re thinking other retailers and carriers might announce iPhone discounts for Black Friday too.

Target matching $49 iPhone 5c deal offered by Walmart, BestBuy, & others starting Sunday

Site default logo image

iphone-5c-deal-ebay-gadgetnewsonline

It wasn’t long after the device’s launch that retailers began offering discounts on Apple’s new colorful iPhone 5c. The device was supposed to hit retail for $99, but Walmart, BestBuy and RadioShack quickly dropped down to $79 on the usual two-year contract and then eventually to just $49. As it did with the $79 deal, Target has informed us that this weekend it will begin matching the $49 deal offered by other retailers through its Target Mobile centers in over 1,500 of its stores across the country. As usual, it will also offer an additional 5 percent off for customers with a Target REDcard.

Belkin announces Express Dock for iOS devices w/ adjustable dial to accommodate cases

Site default logo image

Belkin today announced its latest product for iPad with the introduction of the new Express Dock for iPad. The dock comes with a built-in 4-foot Lightning connector, and thanks to an adjustable dial you can position the Lightning connector to accommodate cases and dock just about any iOS device:

Belkin’s new Express Dock has an adjustable dial integrated to the back of the dock. When turned, the dial raises or lowers the Lightning connector that connects to your iPad so it will work with a variety of case sizes and styles. It makes every day docking faster and more convenient—even with the case on.

While Belkin is branding the product the Express Dock for iPad, the company says it will work with iPad 4, iPad mini, iPhone 5, and iPod touch 5th generation. That means you’ll likely have no issues with your iPhone 5s either, but there’s no mention of 5c compatibility.

The Express Dock is available through Belkin.com and select retail partners starting today for $59.99.

Valve announces Steam Machines hardware beta for SteamOS

Screen Shot 2013-09-25 at 1.02.04 PM

Earlier this week Valve made the first of three big announcements being teased on its website with the introduction of SteamOS: a Linux-based, open and freely licensable operating system that will run any number of devices and deliver the Steam experience in the living room. Today the company announced the second part of the puzzle with the launch of a hardware beta program for “Steam Machines” that will run the operating system:

Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.

Valve has designed a “high-performance prototype” and it will ship 300 of the boxes to Steam users for free in order to test the platform:

While these products are still in development, we need your help. As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open.

The company is accepting sign-ups for the beta program until October 25. Here’s how to apply:

Place your order on-the-go and find it waiting for you in the garage the next time you play Grand Theft Auto V, or send your order in while playing and get a call from your local mechanic to swing by. You can even create and reserve custom license plates for both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online – order your personalized plates before they’re gone!

GTA-iFruit-03The app also includes “Chop the Dog”, a virtual pet game that can change the way Chop acts towards the character Franklin in the full console title:
