Anyone who has spent a fair amount of time using a camera knows that proper lighting significantly increases the quality of both photos and video. Despite this knowledge, many do not go out and buy lighting equipment for a whole slew of reasons, ranging from heat produced to the amount of clutter that it brings to a space. Elgato, a company known for its gaming gear, has set out to fix these problems with its new Key Light.
Design
Most studio lighting kits sit on tripods and take up a ton of space. In many instances, this works well since it needs to be able to conform to wherever photos and videos are being shot, but for those of us who record from a desk, those kits are overkill.
With its desk-clamp mount and thin form-factor, Elgato’s Key Light brings minimalism to the studio lighting game. It weighs under 3 pounds, is 1.18-inches thin, extends up to 49-inches, and can clamp to desks and tables up to 2.35-inches. Streamers simply attach Key Light to their desk, adjust the height and angle, then the physical setup is complete.
The light itself offers a brightness of 2,500-lumens, which operates cooler than most of the competition. This is thanks to 80 LEDs that can be super bright, offer a subdued glow, and anything in between. It offers a color temperature range of 2,900K to 7,000K, allowing you to choose the most flattering or fitting light for your photos and video.
Capabilities
The software capabilities of the Key Light are truly what make it shine (heh heh). Kidding aside, the Elgato’s studio lighting solution is app-enabled with compatibility for both Windows and macOS. Users are able to tweak the lighting conditions in real time using Elgato’s Control Center app and see how it affects them using their computer’s built-in webcam.
If you’ve invested in the Elgato Stream Deck, you can customize its buttons to quickly change your Key Light’s settings thanks to day one support from Elgato. Examples of configurations include brightness adjustments, powering on/off, color temperature changes, and more.
Pricing & Availability
The Elgato Key Light is already listed on Amazon, but currently out of stock. That being said, we anticipate that it will be ready to ship within the next week or so, allowing you to order it today have it shipped to your door as soon as it becomes available. Pricing is set at $199.99, which isn’t too bad considering all the tech packed into such a slim form-factor.
