With Apple’s long-awaited AirPower charging mat potentially being scrapped, other companies are being given a chance to sell similar devices to those of us that are sick of waiting. There are quite a few products already on Amazon that set out to let you charge three devices wirelessly, but most of them have quirky designs, few reviews or are being manufactured by unknown brands. Those factors make placing your $1,000 iPhone on top of them questionable, at best. With the unveiling of Nomad’s Base Station: Hub Edition, we are given an option from a reputable brand that is well-designed, can charge two devices wirelessly, and two more via 7.5W USB-A and 18W USB-C Power Delivery-enabled ports.
When first looking at the Nomad Base Station, you can’t help but notice its sleek, minimalistic design. On the product marketing page, Nomad touts that since “small details are important” the company “added a padded leather wireless charging surface with a soft finish for your phone to rest on”.
This attention to detail has spread across all of Nomad’s products, including options like its smartphone cases and Apple Watch bands. I mean, even the company’s 9000mAh PowerPack battery backup sports a Tile tracker so you can quickly locate it via Bluetooth.
With space for two Qi-enabled devices, Nomad’s Base Station is a great solution for charging your iPhone and AirPods side-by-side, granted you will need a third-party wireless charging case like the HyperJuice Wireless Charger Adapter to be able to charge Apple’s earbuds wirelessly.
One of the concerns with wireless charging is that there may be a sacrifice of speed when compared to powering up over a cable. Thanks to 3 high-powered Qi coils inside the Nomad Base Station, the device is able to send up to 10W of power to two devices simultaneously.
You might be thinking that support for charging two Qi devices is great and all, but many of us have an iPad and potentially an Apple Watch that also need regularly juiced up. If so, take solace in the fact that Nomad’s Base Station also packs both USB-A and USB-C ports for those additional devices.
Even better, the USB-A port can charge at 7.5W speeds and the USB-C output packs Power Delivery, sending up to 18W of energy to another device. With 18W USB-C charging, Nomad gives you a fast way to charge up your iPad Pro’s large battery and a way to trickle charge your 12-inch MacBook.
The Nomad Base Station: Hub Edition is available for pre-order starting today priced at $99.99 and has an anticipated ship date of October 1st, 2018.
