We know Microsoft is set to unveil some new hardware at gamescom 2018 next week, but it looks like the Xbox division jumped the gun with a pair of new special edition gamepads. While many are suspecting to see something regarding a next generation Elite controller soon, today’s reveal consists of two standard edition models with some interesting designs.
First up, we are taking a look at the new Xbox Wireless Controller in Grey/Blue. The minimalist design features a solid matte grey finish with light gray triggers and shoulder buttons. There is also an “eye catching” blue colored panel along the back of the controller. That same blue color is carried into the front with simple accents around the thumbsticks.
It certainly isn’t the most interesting of designs, but it is a nice mix of colors and for anyone into these alternate color controllers, it is worth a look.
Microsoft describes the design as mystery meets luxury. The darker colorway features a gradient design from translucent matte black to a “stunning” metallic champagne gold finish. The see-through look allows for the controllers innards to slightly pop through giving the gamepad a bit of a futuristic/tech vibe. It is a nice touch and really makes an otherwise unremarkable new paint job a little bit more interesting.
You’ll also find black face buttons and thumbsticks with a champagne gold D-pad. And lately, some back-mounted texture grips along the back side.
As usual, both of the new controllers feature 3.5mm headphone jacks and Bluetooth as well as compatibility with Windows 10 and Samsung Gear VR.
The new Xbox Wireless Controller in Grey/Blue is up for pre-order today at $64.99 with a September 25th release date in the US and Canada (October 9th worldwide). However, the Phantom Black Special Edition will fetch a bit of a premium at $69.99. Also up for pre-order now, it starts shipping on September 11th.
This news comes on the heels of the new 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro. In celebration of having sold well over 500 million PlayStation consoles, Sony has issued an interesting translucent special edition of its own. It will run you a bit more than usual, but that 2TB hard drive certainly helps the cause.
