Whole-home Wi-Fi coverage has been the primary emphasis of practically every wireless router released recently. While some offer smart home integrations or other differentiating features, Asus has now officially entered the mesh network market with its new Lyra Home Wi-Fi system.
Rather than incorporating niche functionality into its home Wi-Fi solution, Asus has focused on providing a more solid and secure wireless network with its recently introduced Lyra system. As with other mesh Wi-Fi networks, Lyra too automatically manages your connection to achieve the best wireless speeds it can by shifting the bandwidth load across the various routers the network is comprised of.
The system itself consists of three tri-band Wi-Fi hubs which sport the latest 802.11ac connection protocol, resulting in a 2,134Mbps maximum speed. With all three of the routers working together, Lyra is said to generate a network large enough to provide a pretty impressive 6,000 square feet of coverage. If that just won’t cut it for your home or office, two additional hubs can be added to extend Wi-Fi coverage as needed.
Each Lyra hub is equipped with four separate smart antennas which communicate with the other routers in your network, as well as with other devices to achieve the increased connection speeds. While this isn’t a new approach to whole-home wireless coverage, Asus’ mesh network should perform similarly to other systems on the market, if not better.
One of the standout features of Asus’ Lyra Wi-Fi system is that it is said to help protect devices on your network from security threats. The built-in AiProtection system monitors your connections to help keep smartphones, smart home appliances and more safe. So rather than incorporating smart home functionality directly into the system, Lyra instead focuses on keeping your existing IoT devices protected.
Aside from just monitoring your network for potential external threats, Lyra can also keep tabs on the Internet usage of those in your home. The companion iOS and Android app allows you to not only view your family’s usage information, but set time limits and more for specific devices. You can also temporarily pause your home’s Internet connection in order to keep dinner and other family-focused times device-free.
Coming in with a $399 price tag, Asus’s foray into the mesh Wi-Fi router system is a little lackluster. While Lyra is fairly feature-rich in its own right, it pretty much sports the same functionality found in competing systems at comparable prices. While this by no means qualifies Asus’s Wi-Fi system as a flop or anything of the sorts, it would have still been refreshing to see some added features. While you can buy Asus’ Lyra now on Amazon, it won’t be shipping until July 29th.
Banish Wi-Fi dead spots and say goodbye to unreliable connections. ASUS Lyra delivers superfast, ultra-reliable Wi-Fi to every corner of your home. Whether you’re using a smartphone, PC, game console or a smart-home gadget, Lyra ensures that every device enjoys a smooth, seamless and secure connection — anywhere in the house and all the time.
