The creators of the Magpie GPS Tracker (currently being funded on Kickstarter) were looking for a way to get rid of the anxiety of losing our most precious items. From car keys, wallets, laptops even our pets and kids.
There are so many similar type devices in size and purpose out there, but what sets Magpie apart from those other trackers is its built-in SIM card. What this means is it has an unlimited range and can work anywhere there’s a cellular network.
GPS trackers that use Bluetooth will only work when they are within a specific range of your phone. They usually will max out at 100 feet or so. Since Magpie has its own SIM card, the company says its device will work if you’re close by or even if you’re out of the country. “It will have an unlimited range around the globe,” according to Magpie. Of course, it comes complete with its own smartphone companion app which supports both iOS and Android devices.
Magpie can be recharged by plugging it into any USB port, but you probably won’t need to charge it very often. The company says the battery can last up to three months on a single charge.
For parents who worry about their kids, you’ll be able to always know where they are with “geo-fence alerts.” If one of your kids wanders off too far from your designated safe zone, you’ll be instantly alerted. Also, if your kids need you, they can squeeze Magpie to ring your phone even if it’s on silent. The Magpie is also waterproof, rechargeable, lightweight and it can locate things in 185 countries around the world.

Magpie is smart GPS technology that keeps you connected to the people and things most important to you – anywhere in the world.
So what’s the catch? The device itself will be free, however there’s a $5 monthly service fee to use the company’s location-tracking services, so it’ll cost you about $60 a year to power your Magpie.
Its Kickstarter campaign has only been running since the end of May and already they’ve met the fundraising goal. In fact, they hit 300% of their goal within 48 hours of launch. You can get a two pack of Magpies for $25 with 1 month service for each as part of the early bird special. If you pledge $49 you can get 1 Magpie with 12 months service, a free clip and charging cable. Magpie expects to ship in February of 2018.
