Following the release of Nintendo Switch this spring, Amazon and other retailers were flooded with accessories for the new hybrid console. We’ve already told you the best way to protect the screen from unnecessary scratches. Today I’ll be checking out a new $20 Nintendo-licensed Switch case from RDS that’s perfect for taking your gaming on the road. Because, after all, that’s what Switch is all about!
The RDS Nintendo Switch Game Traveler Deluxe Case features a hard shell design that’s perfect for tossing your console in a bag without fear. A textured cloth design covers the outside alongside a rubber handle. There’s also a zipper that bears a Switch logo, which goes from one end of the handle to the other.
Opening up the case reveals three padded storage areas for accessories and the console itself. A zippered mesh pouch has enough room for a few cables and microSD storage. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough room here to handle a larger battery pack that can charge your Switch at optimal speeds and to full capacity. Otherwise, it’s plenty of space for storing cables and other slim accessories.
Your Switch console is designed to sit below the mesh pouch in a designated cutout. I really appreciated that RDS put a velcro strap that connects the case and storage area, which effectively locks the gamepad in place. There isn’t much room for things to slide around and this helps keep your Switch from falling out when the case is opened. It’s a small thing, but very helpful when it comes to protecting your gear.
The Switch fits snugly against the backside of the case thanks to recessed areas where the Joy-Con triggers can rest. Beneath that area you’ll find two game cartridge cases with Switch emblems embedded into the plastic. There’s enough space for eight cartridges total, but you could also slide a microSD card into these slots, as well.
All told, there isn’t much in the way of features here. It is, however, a well executed case that will provide plenty of protection for your console. Spending $20 now goes a long ways toward protecting your $300+ Nintendo Switch investment.
RDS offers six different options of its Nintendo Switch case. The model that I reviewed here today sells for $20 at Amazon (currently backordered). There are also a wide range of designs, including Zelda and Mario Kart that sell for between $20-$25. Personally, my favorite is the Mario Kart model that features a racing silhouette of the lead character on the front.
