How to get started collecting digital comics

Comic book characters have been flooding into film these past few years. Some say this is the golden age of comic book movies and with all the different titles coming out, it’s hard to argue with that claim.

Most of us can say with some certainty why Bruce Wayne decided to become Batman, or how Superman gets all of his powers, but what about lesser known heroes? Also, where do you go to get back stories and older comics? If you’ve been looking into starting your own digital comic collection or just want to know where to get a few issues. We’ve tried to answer a few common questions about finding comics online.

Where can I get access to digital comics?

  • The top subscription services are Marvel Unlimited and Amazon’s ComiXology. There is still no subscription service from DC Comics.

Where can i find back issues/older comics on characters from movies or TV shows?

  • If you’re looking to get into a one-shot comic book, graphic novel, trade paperback, or series published in the last five years or so, there’s a good chance you’ll find what you’re looking for online. However, moving back further than 5 years you may or may not find what your looking for unless it was a very popular title.

How do I build my digital comic book collection?

  • Digital comics are typically more portable than any other media you own. At least as portable as music, and far more than digital movies or TV shows. The vast majority of comic distributors use ComiXology to sell their virtual issues. Plus, dedicated apps like those from Marvel and DC focus your collection, but are really are using a rebranded ComiXology storefront. This is also great for Marvel readers who can cash in their free digital copy from their print comics, then read it in either the Marvel or ComiXology app.

How much do Digital Comics Cost?

  • Digital comics, for the most part, are priced the same as physical issues. Most books from DC or Marvel fall within a $1.99 to $3.99 price range, which is the same with print comics’ prices. Sometimes, however, digital collections cost less than their paper counterparts. Marvel also offers an all-you can read subscription service with Marvel Unlimited.

Basically with all these services, you just pay a monthly fee (usually around $10) and read as much as you can can take. The only catch is that you have to wait several months for new issues to show up. Still, it’s a great way to get caught up on more than a half-century’s worth of back issues.
