Traeger unveils new Timberline Wi-Fi-enabled smokers with iOS/Android connectivity

It seems like just about every home goods category is getting the Wi-Fi treatment these days, and the grill is no exception. With summer rapidly approaching we’re beginning to catch our first glimpse of new outdoor cooking gear that will be released in the coming weeks.

One of those announcements comes from Traeger. The popular at-home smoker brand has unveiled its new Wi-Fi-enabled Timberline models that offer iOS and Android connectivity, alongside a whole host of new features…

Traeger calls its new wireless connectivity platform WiFire, which is designed to bring a whole host of controls to your smartphone device. The idea here is that you’ll be able to monitor temperature levels, adjust smoke settings and more without rushing back to the grill every few minutes. This is a welcome feature if you’re preparing a meal indoors while simultaneously grilling a main course.

Naturally, we have iOS and Android apps here on this new smart grill. Aside from the aforementioned functionality, you’ll be able to monitor meat temperatures with visual graphic references that will hopefully take some of the guesswork out of meal preparation.

Traeger grills use a wood pellet system for heating and smoking, which is significantly less intrusive than chucking in larger pieces of fuel. My family has been using a previous generation model without Wi-Fi for a few years now, and I can say that it is indeed a superior way of grilling. The newest version from Traeger offers precision temperatures between 165 and 500-degrees with the ability to hold in five-degree increments. This is ideal for smoking at exact temperatures for long periods of time.

Smart features aside, Traeger uses the same top-grade materials that has made the brand one of the biggest names in the home cooking arena. This includes the patented Tru Convenction system that promises to “cook foods up to 20% faster” than comparable products. A double-walled stainless steel interior rounds out the extensive list of features here.

The new Traeger Timberline is available in two different models, the 850 goes for $1,699 while the larger 1300 retails at $1,999. Both model numbers are based off the available cooking surface area.

Not quite ready to make this level of investment? iDevices offers a couple of different Bluetooth and Wi-Fi grill thermometers that are an excellent way to add this type of functionality without breaking the bank. Prices start at $55 and go up from there with each model collecting solid ratings from hundreds of Amazon customers along the way.
