Square Enix is known for a few things these days, one of them is re-releasing some of the most amazing JRPGs ever made and the other is for pricing said titles quite dearly. The Final Fantasy games, for example, still fetch as much $15 a pop on the App Store.
Speaking of re-releases, Square is set to drop a brand collection that has me even more excited than any Final Fantasy game port. The new Seiken Densetsu Collection (that’s what the Mana series is called in Japan) will contain the first three games from the series including Final Fantasy Adventure (don’t be confused by the english title, there is no direct connection to the popular Final Fantasy series here), Secret of Mana, and Seiken Densetsu 3. Final Fantasy Adventure originally released in 1991 for the Gameboy, while Seiken Densetsu 3 has never been (officially) localized for english gamers.
Secret of Mana released on the SNES back in 1993 and immediately became one of my favorite games of all-time. In fact, it still is. The combination of Final Fantasy style role playing systems and a full action combat system reminiscent of something like a Zelda title had me hooked.
That’s why the expected $50 price tag on this new collection isn’t quite as hard of a hit for me as it will be for others. There is no word on a North American release date as of yet, but it will release for Nintendo Switch on June 1st in Japan.
The new collection won’t come with many enhancements over the originals outside of a quick save function, various screen sizes (aspect ratios) and a music mode allowing players to enjoy the epic soundtrack via the Switch.
