New Sega Mega Drive Console celebrates Sonic’s 25th Anniversary but doesn’t hang w/ Nintendo’s upcoming release

About two weeks ago, Nintendo made a huge splash with the announcement of its upcoming NES Classic Edition console. And rightly so. Not to be outdone, Sega and AtGames have partnered to create their own old-school reboot in celebration of Sonic’s 25th anniversary. This is a recreation of the original AtGames’ Classic Game Console.

The Sega Mega Drive Classic will first be available in Europe this fall and will hopefully be making its way stateside shortly after with over 40 classic games.

The Sega Mega Drive Classic is very similar to the original Genesis that was released here in North America. Unlike Nintendo’s upcoming release, this console has a SD card and a cartridge slot for additional storage. It will ship with 40 titles already saved to the system’s memory.

Notable games include Sonic the Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, Golden Axe and more. All together, there are around 80 titles that will be available from the outset with the SD card slot serving as a means for “unlimited expansion”. It uses RCA outputs for connecting to your television as opposed to the Nintendo’s HDMI port. This is a major disappointment, if you ask me.

AtGames’ console version will ship with two wireless controllers and the Mega Drive that plugs directly into your TV. A refreshed portable system was also announced that looks like an odd mix between a Sega Nomad and a T-Mobile Sidekick. A 3.2-inch display is rather small but will suffice, I guess. It has a built-in rechargeable battery that is powered by an included USB cable.

The 25th Anniversary version of the Sega Mega Drive Classic is available for pre-order from Fun Stock Retro for $65. Meanwhile, the portable version is up for purchase at the same price point. Both are set to ship in October. There is no official word from either brand on if these refreshed retro consoles will be coming to the United States. In need some Sega action now? We’ve rounded up the best ways to enjoy classic games with little or no expensive to you.
