Roboterra’s K’NEX-like coding system aims to empower young engineers

It’s no surprise that STEM programs are taking off in schools across the United States. Just consider the amount of technology at the hands of our kids in comparison to 20 years ago. There are a number of companies looking to take advantage of this surging trend. Roboterra is aiming to be right in the mix with its new robotics kit. Designed with “all ages” in mind, this K’NEX meets coding system is bound to be a hit with both educators and students.

This is far from the first robotics and coding kit that we’ve featured as our New Toy of the Day. Projects like Kano and Robo Wunderkind have set the stage for this sort of thing. Roboterra follows along with a similar design (bright cheery colors) and step-by-step instructions. The Origin Kit comes with five different boxes, each of which provide the necessary tools and pieces to carry out a certain task.

The Think Box has the RoboCore microcontroller board and power supply, while Sense has all of the modules needed to detect movements, etc. Other boxes provide screws, metal plates, and wiring to round out any projects. Once a robot is put together, it’s up to the user to program it using the included free software. Roboterra uses the CastleRock app, an “essential online learning platform” that provides all of the necessary instructions needed.

Roboterra just launched its campaign over at Indiegogo. Currently an early bird pledge of $199 will deliver a kit plus an online learning account in June. Additional funding levels bring more robots and access to the CastleRock app. No word yet on special pricing for educators and schools but that seems like a no-brainer play in the future.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for an alternative, we recommend checking out these cost-effective all-in-one Raspberry Pi Kits. Kano’s learning system is also a favorite of ours and is available at Amazon for purchase today.
