The Vuze Camera brings an affordable point-and-shoot design to virtual reality

Virtual Reality has clearly caught the attention of many major players in the consumer retail space. Just recently, GoPro vaguely revealed plans to launch its own VR rig in the near future. Even popular toys of yesteryear have returned with 3D capabilities as some of the hottest kid-focused products on the market. Today, HumanEyes is taking a shot with its new Vuze Camera. This “affordable” alternative to more well-known brands has a pocket-sized design and costs less than a MacBook Air. But without the cache of a GoPro or Samsung, can it survive?

HumanEyes has opted for a slim footprint for two reasons, first to cutdown on costs. Second, a portable design will hopefully lend itself to ease-of-use for entry-level videographers. A key component, aside from its $799 price tag, is that the Vuze Camera will include 3D capabilities. For comparison, GoPro’s upcoming rig only supports 2D video and is likely to cost more.

On to the setup itself, Vuze has eight HD cameras that work in tandem to capture 360-degree videos in 4K resolution. You’ll only be able to grab about 30 frames per second but that’s to be expected at that level of pixels. Additionally, each camera is able to record a 180-degree vertical field of view to round out the spherical footage.

Switching over to the software, a free iOS and Android app is used to control the camera. A built-in microSD card (up to 64GB) handles storage of your video. The software is able to process video in near real-time, which is fairly impressive for an entry-level camera. The Vuze Studio app stitches together footage from each camera at a rate of just over one minute per minute of recorded video. Here’s a look at a provided sample:

HumanEyes is now accepting pre-orders for the VuzeCamera. For $799, you’ll be able to lock-in your order ahead of its release this fall.
