Black Friday may be more than 136 days away, but the way Amazon and Walmart are competing right now makes it feel like we’re knee-deep in the holiday shopping season.
Amazon made the first move last week when it announced Prime day, a 24-hour period of exclusive deals for Amazon Prime members. Then late last week we noticed Walmart put up a banner that said “Low Price every day for everyone. No sales. No gimmicks. No membership fees.” A clear shot at Amazon and its $99 Prime membership. Now this morning Fernando Madeira, President and CEO of Walmart.com, penned a blog post about how Walmart’s prices are always low and that Walmart doesn’t require customers to pay additional fees to access sale prices. Another clear shot at Amazon.
However, these two gigantic corporations bickering is good news for deal seekers. Not only are we getting Amazon’s Prime Day this week, but Walmart has announced a week of special deals including some of “atomic” proportions. Walmart’s free shipping threshold has also been dropped from $50 to $35, which is (I’m sure) not coincidentally the same as Amazon’s for non Prime shoppers.
We expect to hear more details surrounding Walmart’s deals in the next few days, while Prime Day officially kicks off on Wednesday. We will have complete coverage of both events so be sure to follow along.
