Most of us enjoy our audio, albeit from iTunes or Spotify or the like, on an iPhone when we are on the go. The reality is that while iPhones are a decent source for audio, the internal make-up isn’t as strong as it could be when it comes to enjoying your favorite tunes.
This is where a digital-to-analog-converter can really come in handy, taking the stress off your device and letting the DAC do all the work. Audio accessory maker Onkyo has a new solution that utilizes the Lightning port instead of the typical 3.5mm jack to provide higher-fidelity audio.
The Onkyo DAC/headphone amp offers all of the features that we’d expect in this type of solution: the ability to handle digital signals up to 24-bit/192kHz, a rechargeable battery with seven hours of run-time all in a portable package. It also comes with a microSD slot that is capable of holding 128GB of storage, which means you can transfer your high-quality audio to the DAC itself for listening on the go.
If you are interested in upgrading your portable audio experience, then a small DAC or amp like this is the way to go. There are a number of other options out there, even some that are made in America. If you buy a portable DAC you’ll need quality headphones to take advantage of that technology, we recommend checking out the Grado 325e or Audio-Techinca’s M50X.
The Onkyo DAC/headphone amp will have initial availability in Europe at the end of this month with a retail price of £499 or roughly $535.
