Turn your selfies into dronies with this new iOS/Android controlled mini hexacopter

We have certainly seen our fair share of drones, from the world’s smallest to those that fly themselves. Designed to offer selfies from a whole new perspective and with a live 3D virtual reality feed, today we are are looking at the ELF VRdrone.

Carrying a 720p HD video camera, ELF is ready to take selfies (or “dronies” in this case) as well as HD video using basic controls from inside the companion iOS and Android apps. With a Bluetooth connection, users can also fly the drone itself from within the apps as well as set-up support for Virtual Reality and first person viewing (FPV). While it’s hard to say you’ll get a better shot with the ELF than a typical selfie stick, you will certainly be able to get some unique angles.

Instead of going with Oculus or something of that nature, the makers opted to support a simple cardboard setup (like this) for VR and FPV. One person can look at the first person angle with the headset while another is flying, or you can go try to fly the drone directly in first person yourself.

You also can expect all of the typical sharing features as well as video editing capabilities after the fact. This is an open-source system, allowing those with the skill set to make any number of modifications to the system.

The ELF VRdrone has already crushed its $20,000 Indiegogo goal, having raised over $60,000 at the time of writing. There are several different kits and options available, including those at a discount if you can put this thing together yourself. Even with 57 days left on the project, it is scheduled to begin shipping in July of this year.

If you don’t need a selfie taking virtual reality drone, or one of the more expensive high end models, you can pick up a basic flyer on Amazon for less than $20 Prime shipped.
