Ahead of the official Switch 2 launch, rumors suggested we could be seeing some official dual-screen action on Nintendo’s new console by way of a secondary USB-C port. We already know there are some not so perfect workarounds for using second display on Switch 2, even your iPad, but the real question is, and has been for some time, when is Nintendo bringing DS to Nintendo Classics and how is it going to deal with the second display setup on those games? A new patent suggests something might already be on the works.
While I think most of us just already assume Nintendo is always, in some capacity, working towards bringing all of its classic game libraries to Switch Online members – we just got official word of the Virtual Boy library and hardware of all things, and the Nintendo DS library has been near the top of the list for some time now.
There is presumably a number of obvious ways Nintendo could accommodate its classic dual-screen handheld library of games on Switch 2, and it looks like that might be exactly what it is doing.
An official Nintendo patent recently surfaced online suggesting Nintendo DS games could be on the way to Switch 2 at some point alongside with some details on how it’s going to work.
The patent in question outlines how Nintendo might be looking to bring the dual-screen action to Switch 2. A user who spotted this patent seems to think we will have three options: dual screens using another Switch or perhaps even a third party display, a sort of picture-in-picture setup, and what has been called a switch mode (where you can flip between the main display and the secondary screen via an on-screen toggle).

Again, these are basically the same three options just about anyone would have suggested could happen, and none of them are perhaps quite as elegant as some of us would have hoped. But save from taking these games back into development to accommodate Switch 2, which is extremely unlikely, they appear to be the only options. Nintendo could, much like we are seeing with the new Virtual Boy library, force players to purchase a second display that will rest onto or below your Switch 2 to physically emulate the DS experience too – something is telling me providing several options is the way to go, but it sounds very Nintendo to release a new accessory or allow gamers to use a second Switch.
Either way, we want DS games, and it sounds like it is in the cards, I just don’t expect it to come to fruition anytime soon.
