Oakley teams up with Garmin to bring new video recording features to its Airwave 1.5 goggles

Now more than ever, there are hundreds if not thousands of ways to capture any part of our lives, be it our iPhone or a GoPro, technology has flown forward in terms of holding onto any event. Today, Oakley and Garmin have announced a partnership that takes that even one step further, at least for winter sports.

Building off the Oakley Airwave platform that allows snowboarders, skiers and winter sport athletes to capture data about their jumps as well as other analytics, Garmin has now upped the abilities in partnership with the Airwave. Now, it will be possible for to collect all of that data while controlling your Garmin VIRB Elite via the Airwave.

You have to see the video to understand the full next-level abilities this duo can create.

Utilizing the glove-friendly remote of the Airwave 1.5, the user will be able to control camera features as well as the built-in heads-up display which can serve as a live video preview of the latest run, in addition to GPS data from the camera. From a data standpoint alone, this opens up a whole new world of possibilities for the user to track their performances, both analytically and visually.

This builds on the technology that Oakley has already incorporated into the design of the Airwave, such navigating resort maps, jump/speed/altitude data and the ability to control your music playback. The Garmin VIRB Elite appears to be solid partner as well, offering full 1080p HD video, three hour battery life and a IPX7 rating for aerodynamics and water resistance.

Chris Donnelly, SVP of Research & Design & Optics at Oakley summed the partnership up as so:

With Oakley Airwave 1.5 offering such a comprehensive range of features, a key focus in development was ease of use. The user interface of Garmin products sets the standard for the industry, and it further exemplifies the synergy between our two companies.

Both products are currently available now from Amazon, with the Oakley Airwave starting at $649. The Garmin VIRB Elite will run you an additional $254.
