Date for next Nintendo Direct leaks – Metroid release date, Mario 40th anniversary, new Switch 2 Animal Crossing

A new report has surfaced claiming Nintendo will indeed host the next Nintendo Direct in the coming weeks. The Switch 2 has officially launched and has taken over the charts, and still we have not gotten a proper, full-on Nintendo Direct showcase since. But it looks like that’s about to change, and very soon now.

It’s hard to say Nintendo has been tight with its Direct showcases thus far. It did have the complete Switch 2 blowout, followed by a pair of dedicated Directs for Mario Kart World and Donkey Bananza. And then it hosted a Partner Showcase for some upcoming third-party games as well as an IndieWorld show and then another dedicated and quite lengthy stream for the upcoming Kirby Air Riders

That’s actually quite a lot by Nintendo standards over the course of four months. But as exciting as (some of) those streams have been, it’s just not quite the same as the more traditional Direct showcase. You know the ones with loads of top-tier third-party games mixed in with first-party experiences, updates on already released titles, and most importantly, the big finisher that caps off the show and blows everyone’s mind.

All of that said, a new report has surfaced as sources claim the next Nintendo Direct will go live in mid-September. This claim falls in line with rumors we have been hearing for weeks (or longer).

These sources claim the presentation could take place in and around September 12 – though Nintendo does typically like the middle of the week for these things.

Nintendo has hosted a Direct every September for years now – basically every year since 2016 other than last.

If that is true, and considering its 1 day before the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., we could be in for more than few sweet surprises to celebrate the magical plumber’s 40th B-day.

That might mean those less than reliable rumors of the new Switch 2 Super Mario Bros. Collection for Mario’s 40th anniversary might actually come true.

One would think Nintendo must have something planned for the benchmark year, much like it did for Mario’s 35th – it released a limited time Super Mario 3D All-Stars bundle as well as the battle royale-like Super Mario Bros. 35, and opened a theme park attraction.

Just as reminder, rumors suggested the 40th anniversary would bring a collection of classic Mario titles into a new Switch 2 package that consisted of New Super Mario Bros. (DS), New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS), though there’s no particularly compelling details on any of those titles as of yet.

One thing I think everyone is expecting (and hoping for) from the next Nintendo Direct is the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond release date. It is the last announced Switch 2 game expected to launch this year that doesn’t have one, and, unless it’s going to get delayed, we expect to see it in a couple weeks time.

Update: One of the recent rumors on the Animal Crossing Switch 2 game has proven to be a fake – we hope something along these lines comes to fruition, but things are entirely up in the air here.

Previous rumors, and good ones at that, suggested the next Nintendo Direct would end with a teaser for the new Animal Crossing Switch 2 game – this also seems like a very good candidate to cap the September Direct off.

Sources claim new Switch 2 Animal Crossing game reveal coming this month

If the next Direct does land in September, some time around the 12th, expect an official announcement a day or two before hand from Nintendo.
