Hands-on: Is Nintendo’s revitalized GameCube controller worth it?

Nintendo continues to reach into its nostalgia pocket to generate hype about its products and services. This time, they have brought back the beloved GameCube controller that I grew up with. I spent years playing games on the GameCube with that iconic purple controller. So of course, I wanted to get my hands on it to see what it was like in 2025 and see if it was worth the price tag because there are a few things you need to know before getting one.

First impressions

First, let’s start with the packaging and unboxing. The box it’s in makes it feel like it’s meant to stay in there as a displayed collector’s item. Even the transparent plastic over the controller is thicker than usual to protect it. I thought that was very cool. It also comes with a nice, long USB-A to USB-C cable.

The design is nearly identical to the original GameCube controller, from the button layout to the iconic yellow joystick, but with a few modern touches like USB-C charging and extra buttons for Switch 2 features, including online chat. Compared to the Pro controller, the GameCube controller is intentionally lightweight, with a slightly hollow feel that matches the old-school GameCube. This is aimed at players who want the retro feel and don’t care about the advantages a Pro controller gives you.

If you’re a Switch 2 owner and a fan of Nintendo’s GameCube era, this is a piece of hardware worth checking out. I go over the full design, features, and my experience using it in my hands-on review video below.

Pricing & availability

So there is a catch to this controller. It won’t work with older Switch models like the OLED or original Switch, and you’ll need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership even to buy one. Currently, you are limited to one controller per NSO account as well. It is available to purchase today as long as you meet the criteria to purchase one. The new price is up from $65 to $70 as of August 3, 2025.

So, if you are into nostalgia and plan to play GameCube Games on GameCube games, then this is worth it. But if you are looking for the best actual controller, then the Pro controller is far more worth it, in my opinion. Regardless, this is an excellent product for the right person.
