We already detailed the SMART Play system itself in our initial announcement coverage, but we will touch on some details for those who might have missed that. SMART Play is essentially just the name of this new LEGO system and one that is entirely compatible with all traditional bricks you might already have in your collection or add to your collection in the future.
This system consists of SMART Bricks that come in the form of a traditional 2×4 LEGO brick on the outside, but feature all sorts of tech on the inside to bring your builds to life – proximity sensors, accelerometers, light/sound sensors, a miniature speaker powered by an onboard synthesizer, and wireless charging.
SMART Tags and SMART Minifigures essentially tell the SMART Brick what to do and how to react to various situations. The SMART Tags “help the SMART Brick unlock sounds, mini-games, even secret missions filled with hilarious Easter eggs to keep players guessing! And because there’s no limit to the potential number of SMART Tags, it makes the SMART Play™ System endlessly replayable.”
SMART Minifigures don’t make sounds on their own, but instead they prompt “nearby SMART Bricks to make their sounds for them.” And because “every SMART Play Minifigure reacts uniquely to any given play scenario, they provide a perfect reward for kids’ imagination and creativity. Which sparks new ideas for role play, every single playtime.”
If you’re here taking a look at our pre-order post, you likely already have a pretty god idea of what SMART Play is all about, but you will find the official explainer trailer below for a closer look from LEGO:
A LEGO SMART Brick is a new kind LEGO Brick that works in tandem with the new SMART Tags and SMART Minifigures, as well assail of your traditional bricks. They feature a built-in accelerometers to know how it is being moved through space, color-recognition scanner, a built-in synthesizer to play SFX.
The SMART Tag is, in many ways, the sort of brains of the operation – it tells SMART Brick what kind of object it should be and what sounds to reason with. They don’t have a speaker of their own, but rather just send contextual data to the SMART Bricks in your build.
Each SMART Minifigure has a sort of personality of its own, activating SMART Bricks in unique ways to reveal their personalities in different situations. The SMART Bricks make sounds for and based on the SMART Minifigures nearby.
Well, it’s mostly pretty simple, if not quite particularly powerful and accommodating for a massive range of play options. SMART Play is the name of this new LEGO platform, one that works right alongside all of the traditional bricks you already have, combining SMART Bricks, SMART Tags, and SMART Minifigures. The latter two activate the tech inside the SMART Bricks and tell it how to behave. Once the intelligent bricks detect the other two, the “high-tech SMART Bricks react to every move, with a built-in play engine that creates limitless reactions with dynamic lights and sounds.”
