ShiftCam unveiled its “world’s smallest” Planck SSD around this time last year, and now the company is back with an upgraded magnetic version that adds a built-in display. The new Planck Studio model is set to hit the scene in March in 4TB and 8TB capacities, with pricing starting at $399. Beyond the headline specs, it packs several other noteworthy features – which you can learn about in detail below.
ShiftCam Planck Studio SSD is now official
The Planck Studio showcased today is similar to many other magnetic SSD models out there like the Lexar ES5 and the ORICO SSD, that can stick to the back of your phone like a wireless charger. This makes it especially practical for everyday use, as it connects directly via your phone’s USB-C port while staying securely attached. This drive, as previously mentioned, is available in 4TB and 8TB capacities, and you’ll be able to pick them for $399 and $599, respectively.

Another standout feature is the built-in display, which shows both remaining storage capacity and real-time transfer speeds. The biggest draw here, however, is built-in tracking support for Apple and Google’s device-finder networks, making it easy to locate the drive if it ever goes missing. On the performance side, the Planck Studio is among the more capable portable SSDs available, featuring a USB-C port with support for the latest USB4 standard and delivering transfer speeds of up to 3,700MB/s.
It’ll be interesting to see how this SSD stacks up against competing options once it arrives on store shelves later this year, though it’s already clear that convenience will be one of its biggest strengths. Alongside the Planck Studio, we’re seeing a wave of new gear emerge from the ongoing CES announcements, with several brands also teasing upcoming launches, like the 8BitDo FlipPad that’s expected to debut later this year.
