Virtual Boy revealed for Switch Online alongside re-created Virtual Boy hardware

During today’s lengthy Nintendo Direct, we did not get any updates on the Switch Online GameCube library, but Nintendo did officially announce Virtual Boy! It is ready to add an entirely new console to its Nintendo Classics collection in the form of the ultra-retro Virtual Boy library alongside an actual Virtual Boy peripheral you stick your Switch or Switch 2 inside of. Details below. 

Virtual Boy comes to Switch Online for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

Nintendo debuted the first Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics trailer during today’s Direct presentation. The new Switch Online library is set to launch on February 17, 2026 with a total of 14 of those not-so-easy to look at black and red games. 

Nintendo Classics: Select games from Nintendo’s stereoscopic 3D system, Virtual Boy, are coming to Nintendo Classics exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. To play, you’ll need Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers and the dedicated accessory based on the original Virtual Boy hardware – stereoscopic 3D included – when inserting the Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system. Dive into titles like Mario’s TennisGalactic PinballTeleroboxer and more as they release over time. Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics comes to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Feb. 17, 2026. The accessory needed to play Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, as well as a cardboard version, will be available to pre-purchase on the My Nintendo Store in the future.

Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics will be available for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2026.

Nintendo’s virtual stereoscopic system will launch with games like Mario’s Tennis, Teleroboxer, and Galactic Pinball, but you will need the dedicated accessory to play Virtual Boy by the sounds of it– Nintendo Classics, although a “cardboard model of the accessory will also be available” as well. 

So I guess you can play the games with the cardboard attachment as well? Sounds like it.
