All of the Mario 40th anniversary reveals: Mario Galaxy, Tennis Fever, new Yoshi game, and an actual Talking Flower

Nintendo’s big September Direct is a wrap and it certainly did not disappoint for Mario’s big 40th anniversary. The first Super Mario Bros. game released almost exactly 40 years ago and Nintendo unsheathed this year’s celebration with a host of key announcements in the form of upgraded versions of beloved Mario classics, a new Switch 2 Edition of one of the best 2D Mario games of the modern era, the official announcement of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a new Yoshi game, the new Mario Tennis experience, and a even a talking flower.

Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary reveals

Alongside some crossover campaigns with the Kyoto Marathon 2026 and a new Nintendo Museum attraction, Mr. Miyamoto started the 40th anniversary off with the official reveal of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Initial leaks seemed to point at the Mario Bros. movie sequel being called Super Mario World, but it is now official – The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to hit theaters in April 2026.

You can check out the official title announcement trailer down below:

And to go right along with the upcoming film, Nintendo is bolstering its 2025 Switch game releases with a new Mario Galaxy package too.

Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2

As we featured in detail this morning right after the announcement, Nintendo is readying the release of its new Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 package. There is a physical release for Switch and a FREE Switch 2 upgrade up for grabs that delivers 4K resolution. Pre-orders are already live at Walmart and Target

Everything you need to know about the new Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 package awaits right here.

Mario Tennis Fever

Also part of the anniversary celebrations, Mario is heading back to the court in the new Mario Tennis Fever – a Switch 2 exclusive Mario tennis game that will release on February 12, 2026.

Players will “swing into action with 30 different Fever Rackets, each with their own special abilities, and 38 playable characters – the most in series history. Pair topspins, slices, lobs and other familiar shots with new slide moves and defense-focused footwork. There are multiple modes to enjoy including Tournament, Trial Towers, Mix It Up mode (with Wonder effects!),” and even an Adventure mode – Mario and friends a transform into babies, believe it or not, and must “defeat monsters to return to normal.”

Pre-order for Mario Tennis Fever are now live at Walmart for $69.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

Perhaps the only thing more adorable than baby Mario in Mario Tennis Fever, Nintendo also announced a brand new Yoshi game – Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Why this is part of the Mario anniversary I do not know, but no matter, it’s a new Yoshi game and a particularly unique one too. Check out the debut trailer above – it likely be all you’ll see for a long while considering its spring 2026 release window.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park

Super Mario Bros. Wonder – my pick for the best modern 2D Mario side-scrolling game – is getting the Switch 2 Edition treatment alongside the new Meetup in Bellabel Park add-on. There is no hard release date on this one, outside of the spring 2026 release window, but you can get a look at multiplayer elements in the Bellabel Park and some brief hints at other new content this version will see in the debut trailer above.

Talking Flower

And last, but certainly not least…Talking Flower. This is a physical collectible meets toy and I want one right now. This is the talking flower from Super Mario Bros. Wonder and it’s real, and it actually talks, and it looks like this in scale:
