The first big animated Super Mario Bros. movie was beloved by just about everyone, and a major success for Nintendo. We already know it is officially in the lab on the sequel, or at least the next Mario movie, and with the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. just days away, we could be in for a major reveal. Considering tomorrow will see the biggest and longest proper Nintendo Direct basically ever, that reveal could be happening much sooner than later – right after leaks surfaced suggesting the next Mario movie is headed to the stars.
Back in mid-May, NBC Universal might have accendeially leaked the name of the next Mario movie. In a celebratory post marking its 100th anniversary, NBC Universal listed off a bunch of upcoming titles and projects, one of which was entitled Super Mario World. This seemingly confirmed the name of the next Mario movie and quite possibly the direction Nintendo and Illumination were going with the next film.
However, that mention was quickly removed and now, as spotted by fans recently, NBC Universal has officially registered the domain name supermariogalaxy.movie – this comes after it registered and officially used the thesupermariobros.movie domain for the first movie.
This indeed just a registration and companies do this sort of thing all the time without anything coming to fruition, but it might also have just spilled the beans on the next Mario movie’s title:

It is also surfacing at a curious time – less than 24 hours before tomorrow’s massive Direct livestream and a couple days ahead of Mario’s 40th birthday (or at least the first NES game’s release in Japan). It is widely speculated that Nintendo will have at least something to say for Mario’s big 40th celebration, much like it did for his 35th with game releases and a new theme park attraction.
Could the announcement of the new Super Mario Galaxy movie be part of the 40th anniversary celebration?
There’s more than a few things from the first movie that hinted at Super Mario World being the next movie – like Yoshi in the end title sequence – but the first movie also has a ton of hints towards a more galactic setting as well. If you ask me both of them make sense – we could be looking at a World sequel and larger trilogy centered around he Galaxy motif here.
All told, we might actually get some more official confirmation all of this very soon as Nintendo is set to go live on tomorrow’s Direct showcase at 6 a.m. PT/ 9 a.m. ET for a full hours worth of updates and new reveals.
