Report: Nintendo Switch 2 OLED console already in the works at Samsung

While Switch 2 is still just over three weeks out from launch, a new report suggests Samsung has already been pushing to get an OLED display on the new console. While Nintendo decided to launch and debut the Switch 2 with an upgraded LCD display, its main electronics manufacturing partner already has its eye on the Switch 2 OLED launch.

Some folks were not happy to learn that Switch 2 is launching with an LCD display. Nintendo has already released a version of Switch 1 with an OLED upgrade so, to many, it seemed an obvious choice to keep the organic pixels rolling for its next-generation machine.

Nintendo has previously gone on record with IGN regarding its decision to make use of an LCD display in Switch 2 and, while it might just be a cost thing, it seems to have felt it was the right move due to advancements in LCD technology during the development of Switch 2 – it said with the OLED version of Switch 1 it didn’t have support for HDR the way it does on the Switch 2 LCD.

More likely than all of that though, Nintendo is just holding back the OLED tech so it can release a new upgraded version of Switch 2 in the future, the same way it did with Switch 1. This, for the most part, is a typical Nintendo tactic, and it might very well take the form of an OLED update if Samsung has anything to do with it.

A report from Bloomberg recently cited sources claiming Samsung – a key electronics partner for Nintendo in the creation of its hardware – has been pushing for OLED panels to be used when Nintendo finally decides to upgrade the Switch 2 lineup in the future.

While none of this will likely come as much surprise to folks who follow Switch hardware advancements, and likely nothing that should deter Nintendo fans from waiting, it sounds like a Switch 2 OLED version is all but an inevitability at this point. Chances are, if it does come to fruition, it’s going to take years before we actually see one.

The original Switch release in March of 2017, and it took over 4 years before Nintendo introduced the new OLED version in 2021. I’m guessing we won’t actually see Switch 2 OLED until PS6 and the next Xbox are a thing.
