Grand Theft Auto VI release officially delayed: New launch date announced

Rockstar has now officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI until May 2026. In an official announcement on the Rockstar Games site this morning, and after just about all indications pointed to the biggest game on the pending release schedule (or maybe ever) landing this year, Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI will not see store shelves until next year.

Grand Theft Auto VI delayed

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

Rockstar hasn’t really given any specific details and today’s very short and not so sweet announcement post – no mention of tariffs, or market conditions (which is actually a bit refreshing at this point). It is simply saying it just needs more time to fine tune the experience and “exceed your expectations.”

Rockstar said that with “every game [it has] released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

It’s disappointing for sure, but after waiting this long I think we are better off. Rumors have already suggested this thing could be the most expensive game in history, but whether or not that actually ends up being the case or not, this is goin to be one epic release from one epic developer I’m willing to wait on if it delivers the best possible product. My expectations are just as sky high as just about everyone else’s.

The good news, it has now set an official May 26, 2026 release date for GTA VI!
