It looks there’s a Chrono Trigger remake in the works folks. In a recent interview at Comicon in Naples, the legendary game designer and writer Yuji Horii accidentally let it slip that the equally as beloved and iconic SNES-era RPG was going back to the drawing board for what sounds like some sort of modern remake.
Chrono Trigger remake
Reports have begun to surface this afternoon, mainly sourced from a couple Reddit posts claiming that Yuji Horii accidentally mentioned a Chrono Trigger remake was in the works. These reports come from folks that were in the crowd during the live Comicon sit-down in Naples and further corroborated by other Reddit users claiming they were also in the crowd and saw/heard the same thing.
One such post reads, the “father of Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger let this information slip during an interview.” The host of the event then apparently “whispered something in [Yuji Horii’s] ear, and he covered his mouth. The audience went crazy”
Another user in the Dragon Quest subreddit by the name of TheFishyOne backed up these claims saying, “I can confirm I was among those who cheered. He said something along the line of what you said and the interviewer said “Wait, if that’s true, this is big” The translator asked for a confirmation to Horii who presumably understood that he shouldn’t have said that and the translator commented: “You have heard nothing”
After Yuji Horii spilled the beans, another panel member allegedly said “you have heard nothing.”
Is this direct confirmation? No not all. Has Square Enix – the game’s publisher – said anything about this? Nope. But we are talking about one of the many legendary game developers that created the original, and this year is the game’s 30th anniversary after all. Yuji Horii also happens to still have an active contract with Square Enix for his Armor Project label as well, according to reports.
It certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Chrono Trigger lands on just about every short list of the best role playing games ever made – and right on top for some folks. It might also be atop the list of the best RPG experiences in history that has never really seen a proper sequel or full-on remake – it was ported to several other platforms after its initial release in 1995 though (Nintendo DS, PlayStation, iOS, Android, and others).
Could this be part of Square Enix’s big reveals set to land on stage at one of the major E3-replacement events? Is this going to be what many would consider one of the most triumphant reunions in gaming – Chrono Trigger releasing for Switch 2?
Either way, there are few RPGs from my childhood that have left an indelible mark quite the way Chrono Trigger did, and I couldn’t be more excited. This, at least for me, would be the biggest release for Switch 2 this year, Mario Kart World and the rest of them included.
