Sony’s long-awaited XM6 headphones leak in new MFi Apple certification documents: Details on release, specs, more

Some new details have surfaced pointing at what appears to be an imminent release of the more than long-awaited Sony XM6 headphones. Rumors, FCC filings, and datamined/import details seemingly point at an upcoming new release from Sony’s over-ear department, but a new leak courtesy of Apple’s Made for iPhone/iPad certification program suggest the next-generation of the beloved headphones could be revealed much sooner than not.

A report courtesy of the folks at preeminent Sony site, The Walkman Blog, says Sony has now secured Made for iPhone/iPad certification for what appears to be a new set of over-ear headphones. There was no specific mention of the XM6 here, but it does mention the model number YY2984 – a designation preciously connected with the WH-1000XM6 headphones.

This specific model number was found on an official FCC filing for what experts are reliably presume is indeed the new Sony XM6 headphones. This filing also goes on to mention a number of specs for the headphones including the following:

  • Fast charging – 5V and 9V rating
  • The same 3.8V battery found in the XM5 set (but it could still have a higher mAh capacity)
  • Bluetooth version is 5.3 (BR/EDR/LE)

The FCC filling seems to indicate removable earpads, though the details here are thin. Experts suggest they look like a new design from that of the XM5 but it is unclear whether there is some kind of clipping mechanism in place or magnets to accomodate this feature. It also appears as though the XM6 will feature the same 30mm drivers found in the XM5, but nothing is confirmed at this point.

Here’s a look at the mention in Apple’s MFi certification.

Previous to today’s leak, there has been a string of leaks and datamined details on the XM6 that all seemingly point to an imminent reveal very soon. Many suggest the headphones will be revealed and possibly even released at some point this summer. Previous details also shed light on the color options at launch including BM (black), SM (silver), and LM (midnight blue).

It’s been what feels like a long road to the release of the new XM6 – based on historical data and previous-generation release patterns, we expected them to have already been announced and up for sale by now. And while nothing is confirmed as of yet, it looks like the new Sony XM6 headphones might actually be releasing in 2025 and potentially much sooner than later.
