UGREEN unleashes Thunderbolt 5 M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure with ‘up to 7,000MB/s’ transfer speeds

Folks rocking a MacBook or PC with Thunderbolt 5 now have another way to tap into the raw performance there with UGREEN’s new SSD enclosure. As with UGREEN’s other units, this offering boasts an aluminum construction that should help dissipate the heat that is typically generated when NVMe SSDs are pushed to their limits. There’s also a silicone cover help keep it protected from drops, scratches, and the like. Continue reading for additional details.

UGREEN delivers up to 80Gb/s throughput with its new Thunderbolt 5 M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure

A lot of brands make their own portable SSDs that are outfitted with their own enclosure that is not designed with upgradability in mind. Folks that may want to swap drives down the line typically opt for an enclosure like this, yielding more flexibility over time. Until Thunderbolt 5, throughput speeds topped out at 40Gb/s with Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 protocols, but you’re now looking at up to 80Gb/s performance which theoretically makes multi-gig transfers take as little as one second.

Folks who grab one of these will need to pair this enclosure with a 2280 M.2 NVMe SSD. Some are faster than others, so when opting for a Thunderbolt 5 enclosure, it makes a lot of sense to gravitate towards Gen 4 or Gen 5 models to eke out as much performance as possible. In addition to the enclosure and silicone cover, UGREEN also includes a Thunderbolt 5 cable. This is great, because they generally aren’t very cheap.

In terms of value, UGREEN is definitely a solid contender in this space. It’s currently listed for $228.99, but one of the most obvious contenders usually goes for close to $300 when not on sale. Folks who can live with half or less of the performance can save quite a bit when opting for one of UGREEN’s other enclosures.
