Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Countdown [T-7 Days]: This thing looks bland, when will we see more colorways?

While I have purchased just about every major game console over the last 15 years or so, I’ve arguably owned more Nintendo Switch consoles than any other. This is due to the fact that not only do standard, Lite, and OLED models exist, but also a bunch of different colorways. Nintendo is one of the rare instances where I allow myself to splurge with color, and Switch 2 so far has been a letdown. Continue reading to find out why I think we could see more colorways sooner rather than later.

Nintendo Switch 2 looks about as bland and boring as they come

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a lot of gaming handhelds hit the market. Steam Deck really kicked things off in the PC gaming space. Sure, there were a lot of kickstarters and such in the PC gaming space that preceded it, but none of those ever really picked up the steam (ha!) the way that Steam Deck has. While I won’t argue that Valve’s handheld has a much more rugged and utilitarian look than Switch 2, both largely share a similar color scheme that I find to be incredibly mundane. Other handhelds look a whole lot more exciting, if you ask me. And Nintendo has shown time and time again that it already knows how to do this right.

I’m hopeful that as we get closer to an official Switch 2 launch that there will be a more colorful option available for purchase. When Nintendo first released the original Switch back in 2017, it also came in gray, but the blue and red edition was also up for grabs. This fact alone gives me at least a little hope. The sad fact of the matter is that some of the very best looking Switch consoles came much later in the game.

While some may find the White OLED Switch boring in its own way, it’s my favorite. I would absolutely love to see a white version of Switch 2 available at launch, but I’m not holding my breath. This iteration of Nintendo’s console didn’t come until 2021, which works out to four years after the original version launched.

Even if Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t come in a variety of colorways at launch, it feels like it will only be a matter of time until they do. Will I hold out for it? Probably not, and people like me are precisely the reason why the company is likely to slowly release new styles over the next several years. I’m just hoping that brands like Razer will release some neat looking skins to help tide me over until that day comes.
