Report: Nintendo Switch 2 supports upside-down Joy-Con controller setup with auto-rotating display

Shortly before a Costco employee might have leaked the Switch 2 price, a recently surfaced official Nintendo patent filing all but confirmed mouse mode for the Joy-Con. Alongside giving us a glimpse at what might be the new two-piece Switch Pro Controller as well as a wireless charging dock, an official patent is also now pointing at the ability to completely reverse the Joy-Con – attach them to the console the other way around.

Upside-down Switch 2 – reversible Joy-Con

Again, it appears as though Mouse-Con mode is basically confirmed at this point, as detailed right here. We also know the Joy-Con attach to the console magnetically this time around, as opposed to the rail system on the current-gen system. But it also looks like you’ll be able to do it upside-down too.

In other words, the patent suggests you will be able to connect the right Joy-Con on the left side and vice-versa. That also suggests the Switch 2’s display is able to flip around (hopefully) automatically to accomodate for this feature.

The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device

Why would anyone want or need to do this? Well, I’m not entirely sure, but the single headphone port seems to be the main reason, at least as far as the patent filing is concerned:

For example, the user can use the game system so that the upper and lower sides of the main body device are opposite to each other, such that the voice input/output connector on the upper surface of the main body device is located below the main body device. That is, the user can insert the earphone into the voice input/output connector from the preferred direction.

Another thing worth pointing out here is the USB ports on the Switch – there’s one on the bottom positioned in the center of the device and a second up top that is positioned to one side. Being able to flip the console might open up some potential for alternate accessory setups – some have suggested a camera attachment, for example, could be positioned in the middle on the top of the device because of this functionality.

Okay, this all sounds good to me, not overly interesting or groundbreaking or anything, but functionally useful for sure. It’s certainly not quite as much of a game changer as mouse mode could be, but it is one more thing Nintendo is attempting to evolve the Switch 2 and might lineup nicely with the brand’s desire to offer up unique gaming experiences.
