We have seen some compelling industry insider speculation on what the price of the upcoming Switch 2 will be. A Canadian Costco employee purportedly leaked a placeholder price for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console recently. But you can apparently buy one right now for the price of about the price of new Tesla right now on the black market.
You can apparently buy a Nintendo Switch 2 right now – if you have $40K to spend on it anyway
Now, like all early Switch 2 rumors and leaks, we can’t corroborate anything here, but we have seen some reliable early details on the console that rung true thus far – mouse mode for the Joy-Con, magnetic controller attachments, the actually official reveal date, and so on.
All of that said, there’s apparently someone on the Chinese black market with a Switch 2 console up for sale – you can buy it right now if you’re willing to re-mortgage the house for what will likely be a $400 console come April, or May, or June, or whenever Nintendo decides to release it.
Reports have recently surfaced saying someone got their hands on the new console and is now selling it for the equivalent of about $40,000 USD on the black market in China.
This information comes by way of a Switch subreddit via the same source that leaked the early CAD renders of the console last year. There are some screenshots floating around of this same leaker and the black market seller you can see below (we are not responsible for the redaction here, if you’re wondering):

Now obviously, despite there being some hints at this actually being real, we have no idea at this point.
Why would someone even pay that much for a $400+ unreleased console you ask? Well, we aren’t sure about that either, but there are some interesting theories floating around (of course).
Nintendolife suggests it could be to scam accessory makers into getting their hands on the console early – this could allow them to come to market first with more than just a case or controller add-on that requires much more than just the measurements. Perhaps being able to actually test out these accessories or add-ons months ahead of the competition could prove quite valuable, but for $40K, all of that still seems like a stretch to me.
Do I actually believe someone has a Switch 2 to sell? Not really, but it is possible. If it is true, it’s likely some sort of early prototype, or dev unit, but then that wouldn’t be all that useful to anyone, would it?
Maybe some journalist or media outlet would buy it just to say it has one to publish actual details of the actual console before anyone else…I guess that might pay off at some point. But again, huge stretch here.
