Yesterday we got official words from Take-Two that Grand Theft Auto VI was still scheduled to release this fall, just after an official Nintendo patent seemingly confirmed the existence of mouse mode on Switch 2. But is there any connection between the two? Well not exactly, but the CEO of Rockstar’s parent company, Strauss Zelnick, did suggest that it plants to support Switch 2 as much as possible.
Just about no one thought the next-generation Nintendo console would be able to support a title as technologically demanding on the GTA 6 is sure to be, and that’s largely still the case. But a considerable number of leaks and hints towards the sorts of games that might land on the Nintendo console are starting to suggest there is a chance.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer says Xbox plans on supporting Switch 2 in a major way, with games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and Halo titles, among others already in the rumor mill. The same leaker who correctly delivered details on the date of the official Switch reveal has since claimed Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater would be among the first games on Switch 2 – side note: Sony accidentally leaked an August 28, 2025 release for Delta yesterday. Some have even suggested Ubisoft is readying newer Assassin’s Creed games for the new Nintendo console, including Assassin’s Creed Mirage and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
While one might argue that, despite many of these games being AAA in nature, these titles aren’t exactly a 2025 GTA game either. It is, however, clear that if any of this true, Nintendo Switch 2 is going to have to be a more powerful console than some expected – Nintendo typically favors affordability over horsepower and has yet to divulge anything about the specs of the new Switch 2. And one would think the new Metal Gear Sold Delta would be quite a taxing game on the sort of hardware Nintendo is known for as well.
But is there a chance Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to Nintendo Switch?
Well, we still don’t know for sure, but Take-Two seems to be optimistic about the Switch 2 and plans to support it in some way or other.
In the recent earnings call that confirmed the GTA VI fall release date, Take-Two’s Strauss Zelnick did have some potentially telling thoughts on the topic.
Zelnick in no way confirmed GTA VI for Switch 2, but he did have this to say about it:
We’ve had obviously a long-standing relationship with Nintendo…and we’ve supported the platform when it made sense for the individual release.
Zelnick went on to say that “with Switch, and potentially with Switch 2, the Switch device can support any audience,” potentially suggesting the company’s feeling towards this not just being a console for kids and families. He then added that “Civ VII is available now on Switch. So, while we have nothing specific to report, we actually would fully expect to support Switch.”
That to me sounds a lot like Strauss is either saying that Take-Two already knows that Switch 2 can’t run GTA VI properly, or that the game will land on Nintendo’s new console if it can. The problem is that it’s hard to believe that Take-Two and Rockstar, the publisher-development team combo responsible for one of, if not, the industry’s biggest IP, wouldn’t already know what’s inside the Switch 2.
What do you think? Is Switch 2 going to be powerful enough to run a game like Grand Theft Auto VI? Do you even care if it comes to Switch 2 or not?
