One of the more unique and interesting pieces of kit in the Journey lineup is the ALTI – a desk mat with build MagSafe charging. It enjoyed my time with it at review but there’s new more flashy model being revealed today known as the ALTI PLAY. This time around the brand is going for a more sleek black vibe with some optional built-in LED trim lighting and 15W Qi2 charging action. Journey ALTI PLAY – next-gen charging desk mat
The new ALTI PLAY is a large-format desk mat that provides a place to neatly rest your keyboard, mouse, and then some. But much like its predecessor and more casual models, there’s a magnetic side module that houses its onboard LED lighting, the controls for said illumination, and a pair of built-in charging pads.
This time around Journey is leveraging the Qi2 standard that has now permeated every corner of the charging accessory industry – it delivers a 15W of juice to your iPhone via the main MagSafe charger, which rests just beneath a secondary 5W Qi pad for things like a set of AirPods.

Another new addition to the ALTI PLAY model is the onboard LED lighting. The side module that houses the charging pads also features multi-color LED trim around the long edge and front side. This multi-zone LED bezel of sorts supports your choice of a massive range of colors and some effects as well.
There are two control buttons stealthy embedded into the side panel – you can turn the lighting on and off at will, cycle through the various color options, hold to cycle through brightness settings, and choose from six different lighting modes: solid, breathing, snake, scan, rainbow pulse, and rainbow wave.
Journey looks to have also updated the build of the actual desk mat side of the package here as well. This time around it is making use of a “fine-woven” Lycra surface material – Journey says it makes for better glide action while the rubberized underside focuses on ensuring everything stays stable and in place.
Clearly the brand is dipping its toes into something that at least on the surface looks to be geared towards gamers – it is black with glowing lights on it after all. That said, I can’t help but think of this as something for everyone, a way to bring some of those gamer vibes into just about any workstation with a somewhat minimal multi-color lighting approach you can just disable when the glow gets distracting.
Either way, the new Journey ALTI PLAY is now up for purchase with a February 12 shipping date at $149.99 shipped. However, adding it to your cart anytime over the next two days will drop your total down to $119.99.
