Official Nintendo patent confirms Switch 2 mouse mode for Joy-Con + first look at wireless charger and split Pro controller, more

An official patent filed by Nintendo is surfacing across the web today – it appears to all but confirm the mouse functionality on the Joy-Con and quite possibly offer up the very first look at the new official wireless charging pad as well as what looks a lot like the new Pro controller. Check it out below.

Rumors regarding Mouse-Con mode, or the ability to use the new Switch 2 Joy-Con like a mouse have been everywhere, and rightfully so. Early leakers suggested it was coming, Nintendo showed renders of the controller flying across a flat surface on end like a mouse, and it looks like there’s a sensor on that edge to support it.

The complete text from the patent filing, as spotted by Polygon, literally mentions “a sensor for mouse operation.” Here it is:

This input device comprises a front surface, an upper surface, a first side surface, a second side surface, a direction input unit, a first upper surface button, and a sensor for mouse operation. The first side surface is on one side in the left-right direction. The second side surface is on the other side in the left-right direction. The direction input unit is provided on the front surface.

It goes on to describe how the shoulder triggers act as a the main mouse button when the controller its being used in this orientation alongside more details on the sensor:

The first upper surface button is provided on the upper surface and can be pressed around a first rotation axis extending in a direction in which components in the left-right direction are included. The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface.

The official patent also seems to give us our first look at some kind of wireless charging pad:

And lastly (at least for now), doesn’t this look a lot like some kind of new Switch 2 Pro controller that can split apart – perhaps to attach on either end of the console, or to support mouse mode:

We will update this post with more findings from the filing ASAP.
