Nintendo Switch 2 release date might have just leaked…could be landing sooner than you think

How much will Nintendo Switch 2 cost?

What is the Nintendo Switch 2 release date? While there are still a number of unanswered questions about Nintendo’s highly-anticipated 2025 release of Switch 2, perhaps the one we are eagerly awaiting most is the release date. The launch titles, if those controllers can actually be used as Mouse-Con, the actual price, and so on – these are all at the top of list for sure, but when will Switch 2 actually release? A recent retail listing might have just let the cat out of the bag.

Nintendo Switch 2 release date leaked?

We know Nintendo will host a special Nintendo Direct broadcast (likely a pre-recorded live stream of sorts) on April 2, 2025. This will almost certainly answer many, if not all, of the most pressing questions regarding Mario’s new console. We will likely get a full rundown of the hardware, including that mysterious new “C” button on the right Joy-Con and hopefully a look at some upcoming games. But many are also expecting a full breakdown of the price, preorder details, and that potential Mario Kart 9 bundle we have been hearing.

All of that in mind, one can only expect we will also get the Nintendo Switch 2 release date then as well.

Many have suggested preorders for the new console will go live shortly after the Direct on April 2, perhaps even immediately after. Nintendo has stated we will be seeing what sounds like more than enough console production to support what we can only assume will be an overwhelming number of preorders, but hopefully not more overwhelming that Nintendo can handle.

But what about the release date?

A recent leak via a Finnish retailer known as Konsolinet that has since been taken down said Nintendo Switch 2 will release on May 9, 2025. The retailer had the console listed at what is clearly a placeholder price of €999, but specifically mentions the console would be available on May 9 more than once on the listing.

Why the retailer would have the release date up but not the price is odd, and could be a telling sign that the launch day is as wrong as the price, but more egregious mistakes that ended up being entirely accurate have been made.

As some have suggested, this would have the console landing on store shelves (if there’s any left by then) slightly over 6 weeks after the upcoming Switch 2 Direct presentation – that seems a fairly average and believable amount of time after the full reveal – and on a Friday – the Switch was also released on a Friday (March 3, 2017).

Obviously this potentially accidental mention of the Switch 2 release date could  be entirely wrong, we simply can’t say for certain either way.

Some have suggested the release date of the console will almost have to be after the hands-on Nintendo Switch 2 experience events conclude – one would think this would have to be the case. These events kick off on April 2 – two days after the Nintendo Direct – with the last of them wrapping up in Dallas, Texas on April 27.

This isn’t really saying all that much outside of the fact that the leaked May 9 Switch 2 release date is indeed after that – but I think everyone assumed it would be and there’s otherwise nothing consequential about the the second Friday in May as far as we can tell.

The only thing we know for sure in terms of the Switch 2 release date is that it is indeed coming this year. We will keep our ear to the streets for more updates, but in the meantime scan through more of the details and speculation from insiders we have dug up on the upcoming Nintendo console below:
