The Nintendo Switch 2 is official. Nintendo has now revealed its next-generation console officially known as the Nintendo Switch 2. It has been a long hard road to today’s reveal, but it has finally happened to kick off the new year, just like Nintendo promised it would. A full Nintendo Switch 2 Direct showcase will go live on April 2, 2025. Let’s-a-go!
Nintendo Switch 2 official revealed
After what feels like hundreds of leaks and rumors over more than a few years now, the original Switch and subsequent upgraded models will finally be superseded by the new Nintendo Switch 2.
It has been a long road to the now official Switch 2 – leaked specs, accessory makers claiming to have the official measurements and details to ready add-on gear, and industry insiders teasing release dates and launch windows – but the wait is over as Nintendo has now finally made it official.
Earlier this week, leakers and inside sources claimed the next Nintendo console would make an appearance sometime in the coming days, and that’s exactly what has happened.
Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch system, will be released in 2025. Today Nintendo offered a first look at Nintendo Switch 2 in a video introducing the hardware.
- Nintendo Switch 2 will feature exclusive games just for the new system
- Nintendo Switch 2 also plays previous-generation Switch titles, but some might not be fully supported
- It will release in 2025
- A full Nintendo Switch 2 Direct showcase will go live on April 2, 2025
- You can get “hands-on with Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the Nintendo Switch system, at events in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Ticket registration begins on Jan. 17 at 12 p.m. PT / 2 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. ET.“
Nintendo Switch 2 preorders
Best Buy already has a sign-up page at the ready for Nintendo Switch 2 preorders…this might very well mean preorders will go live in early April after the official Direct showcase:

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo has readied a supply chain that should support the sale of as many as 20 million Switch 2 consoles within its first year of availability:
…ahead of the announcement that Nintendo has prepared a supply chain network that will allow the company to sell more than 20 million units in its first year. That compares with the current Switch’s sale of around 15 million units in its first four quarters.
Reports suggested the new console would see the light of day on January 16, 2025 after Nintendo promised it would reveal the new hardware sometime before March 2025.
The Switch 2’s reveal will likely be a somewhat drawn out process if the original Switch’s roll-out and recent rumored details are any indication. Today’s reveal is really about as much of a sigh of relief that it actually happened as it is a teaser of sorts – reports suggest a more detailed reveal of the new console will go live shortly with additional details on software and additional features expected in the coming weeks/months ahead of pre-orders going live before the Switch 2 hits store shelves later this year.
With the official January reveal, it would seem the rumored spring launch date could indeed come to fruition. Some accessory makers suggested it could hit store shelves as early as April, while others seemed to have reason to believe it would land closer to May or June of this year. But with the official Switch 2 Direct showcase not scheduled until early April, that date is likely getting pushed back.
Either way, the Switch 2 is here and, if all goes to plan, will indeed be ready for the 2025 holiday season. Let’s just hope it doesn’t go the way of the PS5 – it was insanely tough to actually get a hold of one without paying way over retail via resellers and retail listings went in and out of stock in seconds online.
While I for one, for some reason, thought Nintendo might let the release of the new Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on January 16 come and go before it decided to more or less take over the internet with an official reveal of the new Switch console. Nope! Switch 2 is here!!
