TP-Link’s Tapo brand has been a popular smart home option around here, delivering affordable multi-platform options to cover your entire ecosystem, and its new PalmKey Smart Door Lock has arrived for CES 2025. The brand’s new palm recognition lock is the latest option looking to leverage a quick wave of your palm to open, no matter what kind of phone and smartwatch you are rocking.

The new Tapo PalmKey leverages palm vein recognition technology, which it says delivers “unparalleled protection against unauthorized access” whether your hands are dry, wet, dirty, or otherwise. The brand says it is converting “highly intricate and unique to everyone” palm vein patterns into a one-of-a-kind biometric unlocking key – you basically just wave your hand somewhere between 4 and 10 inches in front of the lock to open it up.

The new PalmKey will however also support a fingerprint scan or a numerical pin code for access as well as a traditional backup key and integrations with Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings setups.

Another highlight here is battery life. The unit carries a removable 10,000mAh battery that you can pop out to fuel back up, although it is said to last for a full year before you’ll need to do so.

The Tapo PalmKey Smart Door Lock leverages advanced AI-driven, contactless palm vein recognition technology to identify unique human biometrics, delivering fast, precise, and highly secure unlocking, irrespective of the hand’s surface condition.

The palm scanning tech is starting to emerge across the smart lock industry to some degree, there’s a new Anker model on the way and Philips has one you can already buy on Amazon. While we aren’t sure exactly on pricing and release details just yet for the Tapo model, its gear typically comes in on the more affordable side of things and likely to land relatively on par with Anker’s eufy model.

How these palm recondition models will stack up against Apple Home Key and the like remains to be seen. But you don’t need anything more than the hands you’re likely to have with you when entering each time. You might wish you bought the HomeKey model if they are full carrying bags though, never mind the newer ultra wideband models that are likely to start hitting the market at some point this year – they simply leverage proximity sensors of sorts via the phone you won’t even need to take out of your pocket.
