Sennheiser – a trusted in professional audio for the better part of a century – is landing today with an all-new wireless audio system for pro content creators, Mac users, and iPhone filmmakers alike. The compelling new Profile Wireless system is an all-in-one, 4-piece (plus accessories) wireless microphone and recording system with few very interesting tricks up its sleeve, from an onboard built-in storage system to an OLED-equipped receiver, and a power bank to get you juiced up wherever your recording might take you, and then some. Scope it out below.
Profile Wireless, a 2-channel 2.4 GHz all-in-one microphone system
At its heart, the new Sennheiser Profile Wireless system is a versatile two-channel, 2.4 GHz wireless microphone system – it can connect to professional camera rigs, your Mac, smartphones, and more and can also be used as a clip-on or handheld/tablet top microphone setup.
The package consists of a pair of wireless microphones, a receiver that can link up with your camera, smartphone, or Mac, and all of the accessories you need to make this happen, but when you unzip the included zipper case, you’ll find a multifunctional charging bar complete with a color OLED display on the receiver that offers up real-time data on the setup – what’s connected, input gain settings, battery life, and so on.
Sennheiser describes this charging bar as the “heart of Profile Wireless.” It is made to store and charge the key components of the setup – you can house and use the two-channel mini-receiver, two pre-paired clip-on microphones, while also storing the “magnetic clips for attaching the mics to delicate clothing, and adaptors for connecting the receiver to mobile phones or a camera cold shoe mount.
When everything is housed within, it effectively doubles as a handheld microphone while charging everything up, and then when you pop it all out you have yourself a completely wireless microphone recording setup.
With the included adaptors, the receiver connects to the filming device of choice, and lets the creator monitor the audio via a dedicated headphone output. The mini-mics of the system simply clip to the clothing or can be attached using the included magnetic mounts.
In other words, with all of the needed adapters and gyro sensor-equipped receiver display, clothing clips, and windscreens, the system can be a handheld mic, elegantly connected to a smartphone, the side of your Mac, or a more pro-grade filming device with a camera cold shoe mount.
On top of all that, there are three key features in place here to take note of. Each of the clip-on microphones carry 16GB of internal storage for recording, a Backup Recording Mode – “internal recording will be automatically turned on if the wireless signal should become too weak” – and a Safety Channel Mode that “outputs and records backup audio at a lower volume to help protect against clipping.” It’s going to be pretty hard to lose a recording session no matter how difficult the conditions might be.
The new Sennheiser Profile Wireless recording system is available for pre-order starting today with a $299.99 MSRP – it is already live on Amazon but it appears the price is sitting at $317.99 for some reason. We will update this post accordingly.
