Lexar’s tiny new Go Portable SSD delivers up to 2TB of 4K Apple Pro Res storage to iPhone, more

Today Lexar is officially launching its new Go Portable SSD and hub system. The ultra portable storage system combines a two-piece set consisting of a tiny thumb-sized USB-C drive that can connect right to the bottom of an iPhone with a detachable hub of sorts that adds a bevy of interconnectivity options to your content creator setup. We did see a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier in the year that garnered over a $1M in revenue ahead of today’s official US release, but the new storage setup is now available for purchase at retail and ready to directly capture 4K Apple Pro Res footage straight from iPhone 15 and 16 Pro/Pro Max devices.

Lexar officially launches miniature iPhone SSD system

The first aspect of the new Lexar storage system is the Go Portable SSD – a tiny solid-state drive available in 1TB and 2TB capacities you can purchase on its own or with the hub it attaches to.

Alongside the ability to capture Apple Pro Res footage straight from iPhone 15/16 Pro and Pro Max at 4K 60fps, it delivers up to 1,050MB/s write speeds and provides USB 3.2 Gen 2 support alongside a rugged IP65 housing.

The SSD, which is about the size of a thumb (smaller by the looks of it), is available in up to 2TB capacities to store high-res photos and videos. It offers USB 3.2 Gen 2 support alongside 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write speeds “to capture stunning video and speed through backups and post-production work. It also features an IP65 rating for dust- and water-resistance so users can use it confidently in wherever their creativity takes them.”

It seems quite a handy way to add a ton of storage to iPhone considering its built-in USB-C connector can just connect directly to the bottom of the handset – you can also leverage the adapter to get around back so it’s not hanging off the bottom – but it gets even more interesting when you factor in the companion hub.

It also works with MacBook, iPad, and more

Lexar says that for “longer shoots or to add peripherals” to your setup, the SSD can also be connected straight to the hub. This hub carries four USB-C ports “where users can plug in lighting, a microphone, a power bank, and more” alongside the inclusion of “adapters and cables, giving users maximum flexibility to customize their setup to suit the shoot.”

Now available for purchase either on its own or with the companion hub, here’s how pricing breaks down on the new Lexar content creator storage system:

  • Go Portable SSD and Hub 1TB $240
  • Go Portable SSD and Hub 2TB $350
  • Go Portable SSD 1TB $190
  • Go Portable SSD 2TB $300
