Amazon now has the 500GB WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD down at $64.99 shipped. This model launched at $120 last summer and has fetched between 75 and $90 this year at Amazon. Today’s deal undercuts our February mention by $1 and matches the fall Prime Day price to deliver a price on par with the best we have tracked on Amazon. The 1TB model is still on sale at $105 shipped as well. Easily among our favorite options in the SSD game drive space, you’re paying a bit of a premium for the WD_BLACK treatment here, but for good reason. The metal-plated housing carries a 2,000MB/s SSD that puts most of the standard issue models from other brands in its dust. The halo-style RGB lighting array you can customize on PC left us more than impressed after going hands-on alongside the USB 3.2 Gen2x2 drive’s USB-C connectivity and a shock-resistant structure with 2-meter drop protection. Get a closer look in our review and head below for more.
Pricing on some of the standard mode portable SSDs have gone up a touch since the launch of the Samsung model, but you can still land a Crucial X8 1TB Portable SSD for less than the price of the higher-end P40 above. It’s rated for speeds about half as fast as the model above and you certainly won’t get the RGB treatment, but it is still a more than capable model that will save you $5 and land you double the storage capacity.
Samsung unleashed its next-generation portable SSD earlier this month with the new T9 series devices. The brand’s first 2,000MB/s USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 models deliver a higher-end treatment from the popular T7 variants and we are already tracking a price drop on the 2TB version at $200 shipped ($40 off). Dive into our hands-on review to see if this model is right for your setup.
