WotC and Marvel announce new Magic the Gathering: Universes Beyond expansion sets

Wizards of the Coast is announcing a collaboration with Marvel to expand the Magic: The Gathering: Universes Beyond IP library with an all-new multi-set deal, alongside revealing the shipping dates for other Beyond Universe mash-ups like like the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set. What makes this announcement special is the fact that this is the first time WotC has teamed up with another major brand to bring such expansions.

Magic’s gameplay combined with worlds, stories, and characters cherished by millions.

Magic: The Gathering is the original collectible card game, and its rewarding and strategic gameplay, compelling characters, and fantastic Multiverse have entertained and delighted fans for more than 30 years. Universes Beyond is a series that combines the gameplay of Magic: The Gathering with worlds, characters, and stories of other IPs.

These expansions of MTG began back in 2021 with the announcements of upcoming sets featuring the worlds of Warhammer 40K, Lord of the Rings, and Doctor Who. Now, collaborating with Marvel, new expansions will be offered covering fan-favorite Super Heroes, villains, and other characters beloved on page and screen.

“Trading cards have always been a part of Marvel’s DNA, so this collaboration takes that experience to a whole new level. With the depth that our storytelling and characters bring to the table, we can’t wait for fans to see how the Marvel Universe translates seamlessly into gameplay within these Magic: The Gathering products and sets for years to come.”

Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Comics and franchise.

While specific information regarding this new Marvel expansion has not yet been released, other expansions are in the works and on their way, with four Doctor Who commander decks having dropped on October 13. The four decks are separated thematically: three are piloted by Doctors, while the fourth is piloted by Davros, Dalek Creator. You can purchase decks separately or take advantage of deals on the bundled packages. You can also save money on booster packs by purchasing the 12-pack booster boxes instead, giving you far more variety of cards in the process.

The much-awaited Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle-Earth sets are preparing for their upcoming re-releases as well, after first releasing back in June. It’s the biggest of the Universes Beyond products so far: a booster-based set with a focus on drafting – a form of limited MTG where players take turns selecting cards from booster packs in order to build a deck on the fly. It’s legal in Modern and Historic so that most players can enjoy it without interfering with the Standard equilibrium.

You’ll find four main scene boxes: Aragorn at Helm’s Deep, Flight of The Witch-King, The Might of Galadriel, and Gandalf in Pelennor Fields, available individually or as a bundled package. Each box contains six scene cards, six art cards, three set boosters, and a display easel. You’ll also find discounts on the 12-pack booster boxes as well.

MTG Universes Beyond available for purchase and pre-order

The Marvel collaboration is slated to drop in 2025 and will be available on Amazon and select retailers.

Universes Beyond: Doctor Who is now available for purchase, with bundled commander’s decks carrying a price tag of $213.99 and the 12-pack booster boxes for $216.90. They can be found on Amazon, Best Buy, local retailers, and WotC’s online MTG Arena game.

Now available for pre-order, the MTG: Tales from Middle-Earth re-release is slated to begin shipping on November 3. The bundled Earth Scene boxes will carry a $143.52 price tag, while the 12-pack booster boxes will go for $324.46. Like the Doctor Who sets, they will be available on Amazon, Best Buy, local retailers, and WotC’s online MTG Arena game.
