There’s nothing like an advent calendar to get into the holiday spirit. LEGO’s annual releases are some of the company’s most eagerly awaited sets. And this year’s no different. A brand-new assortment of Star Wars, City, and Friends-themed builds headline LEGO’s catalog. All three of 2018’s calendars are now available for purchase as well. Head below to get a peek at what you’ll be unwrapping come December.
Like past years, LEGO has opted to release three new advent calendars for 2018. There’s the usual Star Wars set that typically steals the show as well as City and Friends-themed kits. The calendars kickoff December and lead through the month with 24 unique miniature brick-built models. Minifigures and other accessories enter the mix as well.
Various figures, micro-starfighters and accessories spanning all three eras from a galaxy far, far away comprise the 307-piece Star Wars calendar. In my opinion the minifigure selection isn’t as strong as past releases, but it’s hard to beat a Santa hat-clad BB-8.
Top-notch miniature spaceships and festive-themed builds easily make up for the lackluster figures. I mean who doesn’t love an X-Wing Pilot snowman. There’s also a few ‘filler’ builds like a weapons rack and laser cannon.
Moving over to the City advent calendar, many of the daily builds take the shape of accessories for the included minfigures. The kit includes 307 pieces just like its sci-fi alternative and all-in-all looks to be a great way to expand the winter festivities in your LEGO city.
Lastly there’s the Friends set which clocks in at 500 pieces. Interestingly enough, there aren’t any figures included in this release, as all of the calendar’s builds are ornament-esque creations. Of the new releases, this one is definitely intended for a younger audience than the other two kits. The extra few hundred pieces do help this set stand out though.
All three of LEGO’s 2018 advent calendars are now available for purchase direct from LEGO or at other retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Both the City and Friends-themed kits sell for $30, while the Star Wars version will fetch a more premium $40 price tag. But we’re already seeing our first price drop on the Star Wars calendar, which is now on sale for $34.99 at Walmart.
Each year the calendars end up selling out in the lead up to December. So if you’re looking forward to assembling a new build each day, we recommend picking one up now.
These releases aren’t necessarily the best bang-for-your-buck compared to other LEGO sets. But in all fairness, that completely misses the point of these kits. Assembling a new build each day last year was a delight, and is a tradition that I’m whole-heartedly looking forward to come December.
