With Apple’s latest MacBook Pros garnering lots of attention for their recent high-end spec bumps and the controversies that ensued, Lenovo has announced two new laptops with features that seem to best its macOS competitor. While Apple’s recent updates allowed its 15-inch MacBook Pros to pack six-core Intel i9 processors, 32GB of DDR4 memory, and 4TB storage capacities, Lenovo’s 17.3-inch P72 laptop is configurable with Intel Xeon processors, 128GB of DDR4 memory, and 6TB of storage. Lenovo’s new P1 laptop, which is more similarly sized to Apple’s 15-inch portables, can pack a Xeon processor, 64GB of DDR4, and 4TB of storage. Not too shabby.
While Lenovo’s new laptops beat Apple’s portables on paper, one must always bear in mind the ecosystem. Many consumers opt to stick with Apple’s laptops since they find themselves already using an iPhone, iPad, and of course, Apple Watch.
All of Apple’s latest MacBooks pack simple, approachable designs that most consumers appreciate looking at, but can become frustrated when attempting to use. This can be due to its line-up missing familiar ports or offering less competitive specs, while being priced much higher.
Lenovo’s latest releases continue to take the opposite approach and prioritize performance and backwards compatibility instead of design. The P1 is the better looking laptop of the two new products, offering a 15.6-inch 4K display in a body that measures 14.2-inches wide by 9.7-inches deep by 0.7-inches tall and weighs 3.76 pounds.
While the P1 weighs less than a 15-inch MacBook Pro, it is actually larger in every dimension, albeit not by much. That’s a drawback that most would likely shrug off when considering that it offers all the legacy ports that MacBook Pro users find themselves needing a dongle for.
For those that need the best performance available while also retaining a portable form-factor, Lenovo’s P72 seems to be a fantastic option. Replacing the outgoing P71, the P72 can now pack an unbelievable 128GB of DDR4 RAM (up from 64GB) in a slightly slimmer form-factor.
The P72 packs an impressive 17.3 inch 4K display in a larger form-factor than its less-powerful sibling. It measures 16.4-inches wide by 11.1-inches deep by 0.96 tall and its weight starts at a hefty 7.5 pounds.
Each of Lenovo’s new laptops are powered by Windows 10. Personally, I find myself fully immersed in Apple’s ecosystem with a love for macOS and no desire to go back to Windows, but if you don’t share those feelings than Lenovo’s upcoming laptops are definitely among the best out there.
Both the P1 and P72 will be available towards the end of August and starting prices will be $1,949 and $1,799 respectively.
