DOOM as a game has been around since the early 1990’s and has stayed somewhat relevant throughout the years. First released for MS-DOS, then Sega, SNES, Playstation, Game Boy, Xbox, and eventually making its way to next-gen consoles and even iPhone, this unique game has yet to die throughout the years.
In 2016, it was completely rebuilt and released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Switch followed suit in 2017, and now its time for the next generation to take its flight. Doom Eternal is the sequel to the 2016 reboot and will launch for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One concurrently, and we got a glimpse of some gameplay footage today at QuakeCon 2018. Nintendo Switch was also mentioned, but we’re not 100% sure on the release date there.
Announced back at E3 2018, Doom Eternal is the next induction of the unique hellscape first-person shooter many grew up loving. This game centers around a lone survivor who finds himself stranded on a planet surrounded by demon-like creatures. Some are alien in nature, others are humans who also survived along with him…until they met a bitter end and turned on their own race.
The publisher announced at E3 that players would fight against literal Hell on Earth, giving us a glimpse as to where the game would be set, but said not much else past that.
Today at QuakeCon 2018 in Grapevine, Texas, Bethesda provided more details about Doom Eternal and also gave us a glorious 15+ minutes of gameplay to watch. Do take note, this game is not for the faint of heart and generally isn’t for children either. Take the “M” rating seriously here, folks.
You’ll find the game to be similar in gameplay style to the original reboot from 2016, with some added features. The environment doesn’t seem as constricting as the first game was.
It seems from the trailer that humankind was attempting to harvest energy from Hell itself in the center of the Earth, and it didn’t end too well. The original game took place on Mars, so how the transportation from there to Earth happened is unknown as of yet.
The demo looked to be buttery smooth 60FPS gameplay and has quite the interesting story. You’ll find a lot of old-school gameplay and more weapons than the first game offered, like grappling hooks and swords.
Doom Eternal is available for pre-order at Amazon for $59.99 on Xbox One, Windows, and PlayStation 4.
