Sony celebrates 525 million PlayStations sold w/ new Limited Edition PS4 Pro

More than 525 million PlayStation systems have now been sold since the brand took the gaming world by storm about 24 years ago. Sony is celebrating the milestone with a brand new special edition PlayStation 4 Pro.

The 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro bundle is not just another one of those cobbled together bundles with a game you already knew about and the standard edition hardware. The new LE PS4 Pro sports a completely refreshed housing, controller, headset and more.

Alongside the copper accent features and logo, we are getting an entirely translucent dark blue shell, a design Sony says is “always a fan-favorite”. I’m not sure if that is true or not, but the new 500 Million Edition certainly caught our eye. The design appears to have a sort of dynamic feel to it as the shades of blue change depending on how light hits it (seen in the video below).

Each system has a commemorative copper plate mounted on the front side. But not all plates are equal here. Normally the serial of your machine is etched into the plate but some will have special, collector’s serial numbers. The number 09995 represents the U.S. release date for the original PlayStation console (September 9th, 1995) whereas a serial like 01115 commemorates the U.S. release of PS4 (November 15, 2013). Lastly, 01013 is the U.S. launch date of Sony’s Virtual Reality platform.

It includes a matching DualShock 4 wireless controller, PlayStation Camera, Vertical Stand and mono headset. There will indeed be a 500 Million Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset, but it will run you an extra $99.99. And while we’re at it, you will also be able to purchase the included DualShock 4 separately if you wish for the usual $64.99.

The new machine will also carry a 2 TB hard drive offering up loads of extra space for game downloads and more. And well, it’s going to need it in order to justify the price tag.

The 500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro bundle will be available at authorized retailers come August 24th for $499.99 shipped while brick and mortar options will start to pop up in September. Sony said there will only be 50,000 units worldwide, so the cooper accents and extra storage have you interested, don’t sleep on this one. There doesn’t appear to be any pre-order listings available just yet.

Be sure to take a look at the new God of War Edition PS4 Pro and the Kingdom Hearts 3 Special Edition option Sony quietly debuted during E3 2018. Beyond that, all of our best game deals are in our Games/Apps Guide.
