TP-Link is a household name when it comes to networking technologies. From routers and switches to its latest Kasa smarthome line, the company is well-known in just about every field it takes part in. The Kasa Cam was announced back in September of last year and was a great entry into the smart camera market. Though it was for indoor use only, many people love it and it’s a great value when looking for an all-in-one security camera for your home.
Now, TP-Link has announced its Kasa Cam Outdoor which features an IP65 waterproof rating, 1080p capturing, free two-day cloud storage, and more. This camera could become one of the next big names in smart home security systems with its plethora of features, especially since it’s compatible with both Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant.
The Kasa Cam Outdoor is designed to give you an eye on your home throughout all types of weather. With its IP65 waterproof rating, this camera is built to withstand the elements in the rain, snow, heat, and whatever else it should face.
You’ll receive free two-day cloud storage for up to three cameras, and there is no local recording option. We spoke with TP-Link about this and they said that because they value security, they don’t want to leave anything accessible for someone to steal and gather your information. If you want more storage, then there are options to upgrade and keep recordings for longer periods of time, depending on the plan you purchase.
There’s a built-in siren and two-way audio with the Kasa Cam Outdoor, which makes this a great option for people wanting to have a way to notify those around if something nefarious happens outside.
With its motion-sensing technology, you can be alerted when there’s movement in specific areas, and should you catch someone attempting to break into your home, easily sound a siren alerting the neighbors to check on the house, and the robber that someone is watching.
The Kasa Cam Outdoor doesn’t have any type of pan or tilt function but does feature a 130-degree field of view which should capture most objects you’d like to see. This, combined with the magnetic base mount, means you can easily change the viewing angle to capture any area you want without having to change the actual mounting positions.
With Alexa and Assistant compatibility, you can easily view your camera on an Echo Show, Spot, or even Fire HD with the Show Mode Dock. This also will be compatible with upcoming Assistant-enabled Smart Displays and will give you easy access to your camera feeds even without your phone near.
One area that Kasa really makes itself shine with these new cameras is how it handles local streaming. Many cameras on the market stream your camera feed to an encrypted server and then feed that back to your phone before displaying it, even if you and the camera are on the same network.
Kasa handles this differently when you’re at home, by streaming directly from the camera to your device and completely bypassing the cloud for this function. By doing this, Kasa has been able to cut down on latency to around 1 second or less, giving you a near real-time feed of your outdoor surroundings.
The Kasa Cam Outdoor is available for pre-order starting today for $139.99 at Amazon.
